The Civil War: Voices of Hope, Sacrifice, and Courage

My 95 year old father is a civil war buff - I look consistently for new books - I was so disappointed when these arrived because they were so small - and he reads all day everyday - I was sure they would last him a day or two - He loved these books, I bought this one and Abraham Lincoln. Said they were some of the best he had read - and I promise you he has read a lot of them.

Gordon Leidner's "The Civil War: Voices of Hope, Sacrifice, and Courage" tells the story of the Civil War through well-chosen quotes from the men and women who lived through those tumultuous four years. Some, like Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address or Robert E. Lee’s Farewell Address, will be familiar to most readers. Others bring to life the lesser-known voices of ordinary Union and Confederate soldiers, civilians, nurses, spies, and slaves. This book would be a nice gift for any Civil War enthusiast. Perhaps even more importantly, it should be given to younger Americans to pique their interest in this pivotal moment in American history.
