Extraordinary X-Men 1: X-Haven
C**L
Extraordinary X-Men? Maybe So.
Things are looking grim for the X-Men. Humans hate them more than ever, thanks to not only to Cyclops' actions, but also to a new disease called M-Pox (it's a disease that only affects mutants, though the way humans are acting you wouldn't think so, and it is caused by exposure to the Inhumans' Terrigen mist). And as a result of all this, the X-Men are now in hiding at their headquarters (Xavier's school) that they call X-Haven. Overall, this book was pretty good. It had an intriguing story that kept me interested from start to finish. I also liked this team's lineup very much (I especially liked seeing Storm as the leader). I would definitely recommend this book to X-Fans, and I for one can't wait to read volume 2.

Renewed my love of X-men
Story was great! Ramos art is beautiful. These characters are not the cliches they once were. Enjoyed everything about this comic.

A refreshingly good X-Men story
This was a refreshingly good X-Men story. It does a great job of pacing itself into bringing these old and new(ish) characters together again to ultimately become the extraordinary lineup. For an avid fan of Mutant lore, the story is well crafted to reinforce the background of the characters post Secret Wars continuity reset. I was satisfied with the voice of each character harking back to their former glory with new attitudes as they reenter their comfortable role of Marvel underdogs. The mutant disease and sterility is of course reminiscent of the legacy virus and other such stories, but it is still a great way to give the X-Men trials to triumph over. Marvel's jabs at mutants being a lower race than inhumans weaved into the story can feel like a gut punch to a loyal mutie-lover, but it just adds to the hated, feared, underdog vibe the X-Men have always thrived under. If everyone loved these heroes, maybe they wouldn't feel as special to us anymore. The volume feels like a fresh start with a great lineup breaking free of some of the burdens thrown on my favorite mutants ever since the schism way back when. Even this new take on Wolverine works for me. I miss the yellow spandex and notorious call sign, but Logan maintains his surly attitude that makes the character as he trudges through heroic life, now carrying even more baggage than in times past. Overall a great read. Easy to get into for a fresh reader, but also satisfying for a past fan.

Painful
This is an example of how not to handle a time-gap. The events of Death of X (a book I thoroughly enjoyed) occur before this, but Death of X came out about a year and a half after this. So the writers of this wave of X-books know Scott did something bad, and is now dead, and a moderate outline of Death of X was obviously not written yet, because that future book about past events contradicts this series, which is supposed to lead up to Inhumans Vs. X-Men.What is it that's so bad that Scott did? That reoccurring Cyclops-name drop that litters this book makes no sense, because the worst thing "he" does in Death of X is sacrifice a young life to destroy a Terrigan cloud. It's very impersonal as a singular act of circumstance, and no where near the gravity of something like him killing Prof. X. Why are all the humans throwing around M-Pox as an excuse to hate mutants, when it KILLS Mutants and is harmless to humans? Things were not planned out, and it's glaring. And then some past-continuity stuff is forgotten as well. Iceman and Storm forget that Storm was team leader for a long period previous to this. Young Jean and old man Logan have gushing sentimentality over one-another, even though she barely connected with his original self in the last 3-4 years since she was introduced. [All this said, I admit, nothing is worse continuity-wise than something that happens in Uncanny X-Men by Bunn & Land, an accompanying book in this X-wave. Triage, a young mutant healer introduced in Bendis' run, tells Magneto he thought about moving to Genosha when Magneto set up his colony, but whatever happened to that?? Cause he never heard about the 16 million mutants dying? And then Magneto attributes it to a stray sentinel!?? Eek].This is the first bad book I've read that has Jeff Lemire attached to it. And maybe that's why this mediocre fan-fare feels like a crushing blow. I give it one extra star for Humberto Ramos' art.

A pretty good start
Leading up to the event 'Secret Wars', my two favorite Marvel Titles was 'All New X-Men', and 'Uncanny X-Men'. So naturally, I had to pick this up, to hopefully continue my love for the modern X-Men.I won't talk much about the story here, or give away any spoilers, but I will say, I'll be continuing the series. Magik, young Jean, and Old Man Logan alone are worth it.The trade is good quality over all, with a nice cover, and good quality paper stock. It arrived from Amazon in great condition, with no bending or creasing. Highly recommended!

Loved it.
One of the best books on the market. While I continue to hope Jean Grey and Logan return, the younger Jean, and Old Man Logan are enjoyable, and solid characters. Love the team as a whole, and would love to see this series continue for years to come.

Amazing book! Teams were great
Amazing book! Teams were great. Tension and drama high and action plentiful. The artwork is great! Love this new xmen team with storm as the leader. The Rasputin twins have larger roles and it's great to read about them! Especially with colossus rocking a metal beard! There's an old wolverine running around so you should look forward to learning about that!
