Incidents of a Slave Girl was published in 1861 and recounts the true story of Harriet Jacobs (1813-1897), a black slave who suffered a terrible life prior to the Emancipation. Jacobs spent most of her life in North Carolina ruled by the hand of a ruthless landowner. After several failed attempts at escape, she finally made her way to the North where she was reunited with her family.
