Simple but GREAT for writing and drawing!
This is a fantastic book that is fun and useful in writing for my 2nd grader (7 years old) . This includes a step by step simple drawing that is repeated 3 times with writing suggestions prompts and a simple wordbank on one of the sheets. This helps my som to brainstorm about what he is going to write. Who or What? When? Where? Why ? Write a sentence. Then the other page they draw it again and write a small paragraph. This book is extremely simple but very useful. We personally look up YouTube videos on whatever the subject is to allow him to have greater content. If the picture is a clown, castle or porcupine then we spend a few minutes watching videos on the history of clowns, etc to go with the book. We added this book to our home school for additional writing with the added drawing to make it fun. This was a simple way to make writing a daily event.

Awesome book for 1st grade boys!
I purchased this book as a homeschool supplemental after finding an OLD copy on my parents shelf from when I was in school! I was hoping my 6 year old boys would enjoy the drawing aspect of the book -- but as their mother/teacher I was also hoping it would help provide some "fun" writing activities! This newer version (vs the 1986 version I had found) has three pages for each drawing -- the first page teaches the child how to draw and then has the child fill in the blanks on a few sentences. The second page again leads the child step by step through the drawing and then has them answer "who, what, where, when" etc, the third page provides a drawing prompt (I.e "draw the monkey in a tree"), and then has the student write about the drawing on their own.My boys sometimes grown over having to write so I was crossing my fingers they would be as excited about this book as I was. Well, it didn't disappoint! They love when they get to do these worksheets and have told me they are their favorites. The bonus for me is I know their brains are being stretched in a creative direction for a moment, and I love that it encourages them to write in a way that is enjoyable to them!
