Blender 3D By Example: A project-based guide to learning the latest Blender 3D, EEVEE rendering engine, and Grease Pencil, 2nd Edition

I bought this to, hopefully, give me a solid grounding in the latest version of Blender (2.83). I am a complete novice when it comes to computer graphics and, normally, I don’t review books until I’ve finished them.I’m making an exception in this case because I believe the authors may have a missed a step or two on one of their projects, namely building the kitchen chairs. On the first chair they give you instructions for adding a bezier curve and then adding a cylinder which, unless I’ve misunderstood, is supposed to replace the curve by following its geometry. I’ve been unable to complete this step by following the books instructions. Now, it is possible that I’ve misunderstood something or even misread one or more of the steps, but it’s a little frustrating and hence I’ve knocked a star off what has been an otherwise excellent book.My only other (very minor) gripe is I would have preferred the book to be spiral bound to make it easier to keep open on the desk without damaging the spine. This is only a minor thing and I’ve not marked it down for this.Apart from the problem with the instructions for the first kitchen chair, this has been worth the money. The book is designed so that you can dip in as you like or you can do what I’ve done and jump in at the very beginning. It’s written in an enjoyable friendly, un-textbook-like manner (I’m inventing words now!) and I do recommend it.Hopefully future editions will correct the points I’ve made.

I'd started to learn Blender from YouTube videos, but wanted something I could use at my own pace rather than a video which is sometimes too fast and others too slow. The book is great in the early chapters, and takes you through step by step. It is also good to have something to refer back to with hot keys and techniques documented.You should know that the printed images in the book are not good quality. It's not so much that they are black and white which is the problem but that the contrast is terrible. Often dark grey lines against slightly lighter grey. It's sometimes impossible to tell what's going on. There is an extremely long and complex URL you can type to get a PDF with colour pictures, but this PDF isn't indexed so you have to scroll through many pages to find the one you need and it kind of defeats the object of buying a book in the first place.Like another reviewer I struggled with Chapter 5 and the chairs. Some of the instructions for making the first chair are simply missing from the book. It tells you to create a curve, and described a bit about curves and just skips onwards and it's impossible to build that chair following those instructions. Then you are stuck completely because the book keeps saying to repeat the techniques from the first chair. It is so frustrating. I now think videos are better than using a book, as at least the videos have accurate instructions.

Some good projects but let down by the poor image examples, although these can be downloaded for free online, plus the text is not always particularly understandable. Finished the Viking project and am 3/4 of the way through the time machine but have had to stop to do some online tutorials in order to learn a bit more about Blender! I aim to finish the book projects when I know more as I think the information it contains could be really useful.

Ich habe meine Rezension nach einigen Monaten mit dem Buch überarbeitet. Es ist super. Das Buch ist inhaltlich wirklich sehr gut und erklärt alles einfach und übersichtlich. Ich bin kein Anfänger und habe mich für Details interessiert, aber auch für Anfänger ist es super, um reinzukommen. Man lernt sehr viele Aspekte von Blender kennen. Beispiele kann man online herunterladen und man wird Schritt für Schritt an alles herangeführt.Ich habe mich schon viele Stunden (geschätzt schon über 100h) mit dem Lerninhalt des Buches beschäftigt und bin begeistert, was ich gelernt habe.Mein Schätzung ist, dass dieses Buch einem Blender-Kurs für Anfänger von mindestens 4 Wochen (160 Arbeitsstunden) entspricht. Nebenbei ist auch noch ein Nachschlagwerk zu empfehlen. Nach dem Buch ist man super für die Arbeit mit Blender gerüstet.Die Bilder sind aber im Buch nur ganz schlecht zu erkennen (Graustufen und verpixelt). Dabei sind darin entscheidende Informationen erhalten. Die Bilder muss/sollte man sich in Farbe aus einer online-Quelle herunterladen. Dafür ist der Preis des Buches eher recht hoch gegriffen. Es ist zwar ein dicker und schwerer Schinken mit über 600 Seiten, aber es ist dickes Papier und große Schrift. Die Schrift auf den Bildern, in denen z.B. die Menüs aus der Programmoberfläche abgebildet werden, ist dagegen klein und damit auf Grund der schlechten Druckqualität unleserlich.Das muss anders gehen. In dem pdf mit den Farbbildern ist alles zu erkennen. Da schafft mein Farblaserdrucker zu Hause eine bessere Qualität im Ausdruck bei gleicher Größe der Bilder in Farbe.Ich kann den Kauf des Buches trotzdem empfehlen und gebe keinen Stern Abzug, weil der Preis für den Inhalt gerechtfertigt ist. Denn es ist so umfangreich und man lernt so viel, dass es auch sehr viel Spaß macht. Ich beschäftige mich schon viele Monate mit dem Buch, denn man muss vieles ausprobieren und entdeckt dabei immer viel neues.Man kann das Buch auch online/digital erwerben, ich habe aber gerne etwas Gedrucktes zur Hand. Von den Blender-Büchern, die ich bisher erworben habe, ist dies wirklich das Beste. Und es gibt andere Blender Bücher mit deutlich weniger Inhalt zum gleichen Preis.Fazit: Kaufen und Lernen!

I bought this as I migrated from making model airplanes out of plastic (often by cannibalizing several purchases, also known as kit-bashing) to drawing them on the computer.While blender is a bit hard to learn this book explains it in a step by step way.
