Great for beginners!
My son has friends at school that play this game, and has become interested in this game. My husband and I knew NOTHING about the game and collecting cards, but my kids really wanted Pokemon cards for Christmas. We started researching and decided to start with the training packs, so we could all learn the game. Was surprised at how small they were, but had everything needed to start with the basics. This set is great because it has two decks, and they come ordered with step-by-step directions on how to play the game. Each deck has a small guide, which tells how you should attack, and play out each turn; perfect for a newbies like us. We played with the decks in order, and then even my youngest had a grip on it, so we could shuffle and play on our own. Comes with a mat to play the game on, a coin to flip, counters for damage, 2 decks of cards with guides on beginning how to play. I do wish it came with 2 mats, as the back of the mat has detailed rules and a guide, but you can't access it during the game without it being a pain. You can of course play the game without the mat, but my kids started playing with it that way, so now they think they can't play it without the mat. There is so much more the Pokemon than we have figured out, but we like this training pack compared to to the another one we got (Pokemon TCG XY Trainer Kit Latias and Latios) is that 1-it includes Piccachu Libre', and since Piccachu is my kids favorite, they were thrilled with this! It also only has 1 color of energy for each deck, which makes the game a little simpler for beginners with no knowledge of the game. Overall, we are thrilled with this product, especially for the price!

Great introduction to playing Pokemon.
I bought this for my 7-year-old son's birthday because he had a budding interest in Pokemon. It came with 8 different packs which I think was an error on Amazon's end, strictly based on the other reviews. This is a perfect set for learning to play Pokemon. It has a game "board" with instructions on how to play. The board has slots that indicate where each card is supposed to go, and each side has a list of steps to take to play the game. It is very helpful in reminding my son what steps he has to do. He also has a tendency to attack before even drawing another card, so reminding him to read the steps at the start of each play keeps me from having to continually run down all the things to do each round (draw a card, play energies, play trainers, etc.). There is also a booklet on for each side with a set of steps to take your first round. This gives you a good idea on how the game works, and how different moves interact with each other. Since both my bf and I played this game as children, we didn't use this when teaching my son. This pack allows you to play against someone with half a deck, however, if you use two packs, you can play a full deck. We opened three so my boyfriend and I can play with my son. We're keeping a fourth deck to allow my son to mix it to make his own powerful deck. The other four are being given away as gifts.

great kit to learn on!
I got these to learn the game so I can teach my nephew. It's a great little started kit that walks you through step by step with both sets of cards already in order for the directions. It's one deck of cards split in two, so if you have kids they can start right away. The two sets can be combined for one player which is a normal deck if you want. (split up the game is basically a quick half game)Came with..60 cards (2 half decks, shocking has 1 hologram pikachu libre card and water has 1 hologram suicune card )1 pikachu coin to flip18 damage counter things1 box to hold the deck (I used the online game code card for a seperator)2 directions/walkthrough for the game for each set of cards (don't shuffle them, they're in order for the walkthrough)1 paper game play mat with directions on the back (the front shows you where to put the cards)1 card with an online code you can redeem online for this set to be added to your digital collectionI'm very pleased, I will be teaching it to my nephew now that I know what I'm doing lol. He's 7 and I think he will grasp it pretty quickly. I'm wanting him to read the cards, work on his math, and learn to strategize a little later and I think this will be a fun way. The art on the cards will draw him in :)

Great for learning to play the game
I have 3 young boys who are getting into Pokémon cards, but didn’t actually know how to play - and neither did I. This set is good for walking through basic instructions. Would have been too complicated for my kids on their own I think (5 and 7 years old) due to having 2 instruction sets (1 for each player), but it was simple enough for me to use and get them playing. A bit expensive, but good product.

Good, but not perfect way to learn the game
What's great about this pack is comes with materials, including a spread with indicators for where to place all your cards, so that you can start to learn Pokemon TCG. It's a full deck if you combine both packs, but be careful about mixing them all up right after you get the cards because the instructions depend on keeping them in order initially. What this trainer kit does NOT do is teach you ALL of the rules in Pokemon. It introduced the basic concepts of play, but there are a few rules that are not mentioned. That's okay, because it's complicated enough off the bat for someone who has never played before (and many young children will find the game too complicated to understand). Of course there are plenty of resources online for the committed learner. The Pokemon TCG App for tablets is in some ways a better way to learn how to play because the computer knows what to do and tells you when you can and can't do something. There are no fancy EX cards in this deck, but Pikachu Libre is cute and fun. It doesn't really come with enough damage counters for a more complicated game where you might have multiple Pokemon on both sides with damage, but you can always make more if you need to I suppose.
