I'll happily go stand in the "quiet corner
This album is way, way beyond what I expected... It has some unbelievably tight and well orchestrated horns. The solos are aggressive and swinging, and the lineup is pure jazz royalty. Being a bassist myself, I find myself drawn to Sam Jones and his groove/feel/pulse more than any other bassist. There is a depth of substance on this record and in my opinion stands up with kind of blue, et. al. Buy it... It's a blessing to have discovered Mr. Jones. I thought I was hot **** having played with some names, but Sam has taken me back to school... and after listening to this record, I'll happily go stand in the "quiet corner." Simply superb....

Jones' first three albums as a leader
This is a three album set that features Jones' first three albums as a leader. Not only do they showcase his abilities on both bass and cello, but his ability to lead large ensembles. These albums were all recorded while he was a member of Cannonball Adderley's quintets and sextets, and a large number of sidemen in this set are from those groups.Although there are no sound samples on the CD version at the time of this review there are on the MP3 album's page at Sam Jones Cello & Bass. The Soul Society + the Chant + Down Home . Let those guide you. The music is definitely hard bop and has some all star musicians on each track. If you are familiar with Adderley's work you will be right at home with these albums, and the cello (and on some tracks flute) add a wonderful dimension to the hard bop genre that this set represents. Here are the albums and who performed on them:The first eight tracks is Jones' debut album titled Soul Society that was recorded for Riverside in two March 1960 sessions in NYC. On the March 8 session the line-up consisted of Nat Adderley on cornet, Jimmy heath on tenor sax, Charles Davis on baritone sax and Jones on cello. The rhythm section was comprised of Bobby Tommons on piano, Keter Betts on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. This session produced tracks 1 through 4. The remaining four tracks were cut during the March 10 session with Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Jimmy heath on tenor sax and Charles Davis on baritone sax. The rhythm section was comprised of Bobby Tommons on piano, Jones on bass and Louis Hayes on drums.Next eight tracks are the album titled Chant that was recorded for Riverside at the Plaza Sound Studios in NYC on January 13 & 26, 1961. Track 12 on Disc One and tracks 1 through 3 on Disc Two were recorded during the January 13 session that featured a large ensemble comprised of Nat Adderley on cornet, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Melba Liston on trombone, Cannonball Adderley on alto sax, Jimmy Heath on tenor sax and Tate Houston on baritone. The rhythm section was equally large with Victor Feldman on piano, Les Spann on guitar, Jones on bass and Louis Hayes on drums.Tracks 9 through 11 on Disc One and track 4 on Disc Two were recorded during the January 26 session. Personnel were the same brass and reed members as the first session accompanying Jones on cello. The change up was in the rhythm section, comprised of Victor Feldman on vibraphone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Keter Betts on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. The remaining eight tracks are the album titled Down Home that was recorded in NYC for Riverside on June 25, and August 15 and 16, 1962. For 'Round Midnight, Falling in Love with Love and O.P. the line-up is Les Spann on flute, Jones on cello and a rhythm section comprised of Joe Zawinul on piano, Israel Crosby on bass and Vernel Fournier on drums (the latter two of Ahmed Jamal Trio fame.) Those tracks were recorded during the June 25, 1962 session. All of the remaining tracks are from the August 15, 1962 session and feature Snooky Young, Blue Mitchell and Clark Terry on trumper, Jimmy Cleveland on trombone, Frank Strozier on flute and alto saxophone, Jimmy Heath on tenor sax, Pat Patrick on baritone sax and flute. Depending on the track Joe Zawinul and Wynton Kelly were on piano, Jones on cello and bass depending on the track (when he is on cello Ron Carter takes over on bass) and Ben Riley on drums.

“Cello, bass and LOADS of flute”
Everything is great but be warned if you don’t care for flute (or flute in jazz) this is a difficult collection. Some great swinging selections and then the willowy wandering flute enters like a Disney character to war. I listen to these albums to this day - just be warned. LOTS AND LOTS of flute.

aubaine
