Aluminum is the way to go!
I chose an aluminum drain pan because the new water heater to be installed is over 200 lbs and I knew that there would be no way to cleanly lift it and deposit it into a plastic drain pan. Instead I selected aluminum and made a ramp of sorts out of wood scraps so that I could "walk" the water heater up and into the pan. I accepted that the heater could rest a bit on the edge of the pan and dent and bend it and for that reason aluminum is the right choice. It will withstand the damage, can be bent back into shape and will still hold water. A large pan like this one (28" inside diamater) is ideal even with a 22" water heater provided that you have the necessary space for it. I arranged the heater so that the extra space in the pan would be under the water connections, the relief valve and the condensate connections. This way even if the heater itself doesn't leak but one of these other components does the leakage will go into the pan rather than missing it and trigger the leak detection if your water heater is so equipped. If not you can use other leak detectors in the pan or at its drainage such as ASIN B095STF6FG for which I have sensors at many possible leak locations in my home

Great water heater pan!
This aluminum water heater pan is amazing, it fit really well around the water heater and will definitley hold some water while stopping to fix leaks. and, as an added bonus it does have a pour spout if you want to pipe it out somewhere. I chose not to but ive had a few leaks and i just threw some absorbent material down while I worked on them.🤷 really good bang for the buck.

Vulnerable packaging but useful tray
As others have commented, this really needs better packaging. It was in a large cubicle box, just lying corner to corner with the most comical packaging I've ever seen... A single 9x12 bubble envelope. The box had taken a ding and there was a bent side but that straightened out okay and doesn't matter. It happened to be a bit too big to meet my own needs but that doesn't reflect on the product... it's fine. The aluminum is not particularly strong and is very easy to bend, but once it's sitting there doing its job it's adequate for intended purpose as long as you don't step on it or rest heavy objects on the edge. Also useful for multiple large plants, parts sorting, gathering place for muddy things by the door, noisy chicken feeding, or other organizational purposes where a large sacrificial tray is just the ticket... assuming it survives the trip. I see some other reviewers had more damage than I did. The bottom surface of mine was perfectly smooth, and my only bends were in one edge over about a foot of easily fixable squish. This is a really awkward size thing to mail, so packaging it properly in a sandwich with padding is probably more cost than it's worth. By the way, the drain edge is high enough up that will never really empty, but that's a hard problem to solve and probably does not matter for its stated purpose. What this will do just fine is contain spills from a water heater disaster and overflow in a controlled direction. (Photo taken after the bend was fixed. Just had to show that lovely bit of padding, which was actually lying underneath it.)

Fits as a pan for a kerosene heater
This item was designed as a catch pan for water heaters. Instead, I used it as a pan for a kerosene heater and it fits with enough space around. This will help with any spillage of kerosene when refilling. I highly recommend it!

we were outside of the box with our use
we attached legs to this to make a "heat deflector" for our gas fire pit. It gets hot but makes a 100% difference on keeping the heat in the party.

Good product, bad packaging
The product was fine, the shipping was terrible. Upon receipt, the box was visibly bent and the aluminum pan within was very deformed. I was able to bend it back into shape and use it but it was close to just having to be returned.
