Rust in Peace: The Inside Story of the Megadeth Masterpiece (Audio Download): Dave Mustaine, Joel Selvin, Slash - introduction, Dave Mustaine, David Ellefson, Chuck Behler, Tony Lettieri, Randall Kertz, Pam Mustaine, Bob Nalbandian, Mike Clink, Nate Ryan, Max Norman, Fred Berman, Vikas Adam, Da Capo Press: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: An interesting read for Megadeth fans with an intresting perspective. - The book is rather short being only 200ish pages however the way it is written is very captivating. The book is written in an interesting perspective with the living members of the "Rust in Peace" era talking in first person. It is interesting to see the differences between how the members handled the same situation in different ways. For example Mustaines and Ellifsons experience in the same rehab program. The book covers not only the recording of "Rust in Peace" but also the tail end of the Monsters of Rock tour and the process of changing drummers from Chuck Bheler to Nick Menza. There are multiple pages which feel like they are repeating the same talk about drugs following the "I got high, I tried to get clean and it didnt work so I got high again". Overall great read. Review: Insightful but tormented - All time favourite album, created out of madness and egos. Great read for any fan of this band and genre of music

A personal look at a great metal album
Back in 2010 Dave Mustaine published an autobiography titled simply 'Mustaine - A Life in Metal', although I initially considered not buying it, given that I thought Dave might use the book to vent his frustrations about Metallica, I was advised by a couple of mates to give it a go, and I'm very glad I did. Not only was it a great read, but it was nothing if not balanced. When news came earlier this year about a second volume centring around the album 'Rust in Peace' I pressed the pre-order button, and waited for the months to fall by. During the COVID-19 situation I've been reading more than ever, since possibly my early twenties, so books are arriving and being devoured in a matter of days! First of all, a couple of observations which did shock me a little, 'Rust in Peace' is not a big book, and it's double-spaced with white end pages after most chapters. The second thing which becomes glaringly obvious when you start reading the book, is that it's no more Dave Mustaine's book than it is say David Ellefson's, any other member of Megadeth's, Pam Mustaine, various producers and engineers, management etc.... The list goes on. Because 'Rust in Peace' is very much a cut and paste interview book, in much the same way as say the excellent 'Please Kill Me' by Legs McNeil. That all said, the story is great, beginning at the Castle Donnington appearance of 1988, with a very different Megadeth to the one that would ultimately make 'Rust in Peace', Guns & Roses' low on the bill, a very different world to the next festival G&R would play with Megadeth too. The story then moves to Ireland and Dave Mustain's infamous onstage comment regarding the troubles, which resulted in getting the group out of Ireland a bit sharpish following the gig! After which Megadeth return to the USA, fall deeper into heavy drug use, jump in and out of various rehab programmes, and seems to change management more often than most people change their socks. In the middle of all this Dave and Junior are trying to rebuild Megadeth, the line-up now being exclusive to the two of them, while falling on and off the wagon but constantly talking new album, which the record company are telling them has to be perfect. With a plan finally in place, new management and the addition of Nick Menza (drums) and Marty Friedman (guitar) the story moves into the making of 'Rust in Peace'. Ellefson is ever present, Mustaine not so, while the producer (Mike Clink) is almost constantly waiting for Axl Rose to ring him! And when he does, the group need a new producer. Dave does get clean, and along the way meets Pam, Junior is also clean, and on this background 'Rust in Peace' is completed. Megadeth release a very heavy album, then hit the road with Slayer (in Europe) and Judas Priest (in the USA/Japan) as a live unit the new line-up is red hot, Dave marries Pam, and 'Rust in Peace' goes on to become a legendary metal album. This is a book I would highly recommend to fans of both Megadeth and metal music; it is the rollercoaster ride you might expect and it does beggar the question; how did they pull it off? But you'll find that out only by reading.....

Great book for a Mega fan -
Great book and I liked the different perspectives. Suited me fine as I’m not bothered about big books with long winded passages. It was kind of short and snappy and I liked the build up to rust in peace pre rust line up. I know others complained about it but I thought it was a nice summary of the album and had some good stories. RIP Nick Menza

A great gift for any fan of Megadeth
A great insight to the band Megadeth and how their smash 80’s album ‘Rust in Peace’ came to be.

Okay but not a substantial or essential read as a fan
Ok but nothing that’s going to surprise you as a long term fan and rather short for the money

Gives some insight but very flawed
Rust In Peace is an incredible album. One of those rare records that you'll always remember when and where you were when you first heard it. Holy Wars, Five Magics, Take No Prisoners alone are enough to make it one of the greatest albums of all time. So, does this book do the great album justice? Yes and no. This book is written in an interview style, with Dave Mustaine, Davide Ellefson and Marty Friedman being the main contributors. I wasn't sure about this stylistic choice initially, but I soon appreciated how of all these different viewpoints came together to help me get a better insight into the making of the album. Of the main contributors, I thought that David Ellefson was the most insightful and informative. However, whilst reading the first half of the book you'd be forgiven for thinking that you'd accidently picked up The Inside Story of the Drug Abuse Behind Rust In Peace. It's the usual tales of heroin, shooting heroin, trying to kick heroin, being addicted to heroin that are a staple theme in rock biographies. I appreciated the context it gave behind the making of the album and how it was "written in the darkness of heroin but recorded under sobriety" but I wouldn't have minded if they sacrificied the hedonism for more tales inside the making of this great album. Dave Mustaine is listed as the author but he doesn't come across as all that likeable unfortunately. I know that's not a particularly subersive statement as the guy is pretty polarising but try not to roll your eyes when he starts a chapter by declaring himself an "American success story". You don't need to remind us, mate! Amongst all the catty comments, one of his more ponderous contributions was replying "Uh Huh" to something Marty Friedman said which I found to be pretty helpful. There's some pretty poor fact checking too. Thier 13 album is listed as coming out two years later than it actually did which is pretty mind-blowing considering that this is an offical Megadeth biography and has been co-authored! Overall, while it's not great by any means I came away from this book feeling like I understood what it was like to record Rust in Peace as well as the impact that the band felt it had on them as well as the thrash metal genre as a whole after realising it. Dave Ellefson and producer Mike Clink give the most insight and it's obviously a massive shame that the late drumming master Nick Menza is not one of the contributors.
