Save Me: Expanded Edition

Great early disco album by the popular 70s/early 80s disco act Silver Convention (previously known as Silver Bird and Silver Bird Convention). Contains two bonus tracks: 12" versions of "Tiger Baby" (previously only available on a very rare import 12") and "Fly, Robin, Fly" (readily available on other compilations). Oddly missing is the 12" version of "(Always) Another Girl" at 5:33, which is easily found on other compilations, fortunately. Otherwise includes all album versions the same as the original album. One note: the album version of "Save Me" on the U.S. vinyl is NOT the same as the Canada vinyl (I don't know about releases from other countries). I'm not positive, but I think the version here is the Canadian version. Another note: the original albums are rather poorly segued on side one (the first 4 tracks) -- each song ends rather abruptly going into the next song. That could have been fixed for this CD release, but was not... too bad. All-in-all, still an excellent CD, and the quality to my ear sounds very good. Recommended.

Like most disco music there is not much substance to it. Whenever I heard disco music it sounded like there was some European influence involved. Silver Convention produced music that was definitely European in flavor, particularly Munich, Germany. This reissue compilation consists mostly of music with a repetitious beat, uninspired band playing and lackluster vocals. Similar to eating something that has little nutritional value and leaves you feeling hungry a half hour later, is a good description of this album and disco in general. Three stars are for the outstanding remastered sound and sixteen page booklet containing color, black and white photos, musical highlights of the group and background information on the songs.

This expanded edition is NOT what I expected. Particularly the first two songs. Save Me, the first track remaster, has a sax arrangement that was NOT in the very first release of it. It simply murders the song. The remaster of it is low quality. It only adds some punch in volume. The second track, I like it, the fade out is terrible!!! The cut off the song all of a sudden! And the following tack starts abruptly.The last two tracks that are a 12-inch Disco version have nothing new but you can notice that Tiger Baby was edited (cut and paste) to last longer. Fly Robin Fly is already a long version which was already on the original LP edition. I would have mentioned that they included the Radio Edit instead.If possible, I will return it.

同年代のスリーディグリーズに影に隠れて知名度は少ないかもしれないが、歌ものととしてのコーラスワーク、ハーモニーで比べるならスリーディグリーズの方に軍配が上がる、しかしどうして、歌ものとしては物足りないかもしれないが、ゾクゾクするオーケストラアレンジとリズムアレンジはこっちに軍配が上がるヒットシングルの、フライ、ロビン、フライ曲頭の緊張感溢れるベースのリフがゾクゾクするほどカッコイイ

La réédition de Save Me s'est longtemps faite attendre...Un classique du genre disco comme on n'en fait plus...J'ai toujours été fan de Silver Convention et ne cacherait pas le plaisir de les retrouver en version remasterisée... Save est à la fois le meilleur et le plus typique du trio... et reste à ce jour le plus populaire... un très bon choix de réédition en somme...L'album est de plus très cohérent et offre un ambiance disco atmosphérique et sensuelle (hormis Please Don't Change The Chords Of This Song qui détonne ici)... qui ravira les amateurs du genre anciens et à venir...Nous attendons déjà la suite...

Für kurze Zeit Anfang der 1990er gab es die ersten beiden Silver Convention-LPs auf CD, sie verschwanden aber schnell wieder vom Markt. Jetzt hat sich endlich das Label BBR (im Vertrieb von Cherryred) dem ersten Album erbarmt und es erneut zum fast 40jährigen Jubiläum in remasterter Qualität und mit einem informativen Booklet erneut herausgebracht. Zum Originalalbum brauche ich sicher nichts zu schreiben, die Fans kennen es in und auswendig, deswegen mehr zur Aufmachung und zu den Bonustracks. Im Booklet wird sehr genau (in Englisch) beschrieben, wie das Album entstanden ist und wer denn nun genau gesungen hat. Auf dem deutschen Cover der Single Fly, Robin, Fly und im Fernsehen waren ja hierzulande Penny McLean, Ramona Wulf und Linda Übelherr "G. Thompson" (eine Sängerin, die in vielen Gruppen dabei war: Love Generation, Les Humphries Singers, Silver Convention und Hornettes) zu sehen, es war allerdings schon damals bekannt, dass im Studio andere Damen am Mikrofon standen. Auf diese wird im Booklet sehr genau eingegangen, von den sichtbaren Frauen wird eher wenig geschrieben. Wie später bei Boney M. wurde ein Lied der LP (Save Me) ein Hit und man brauchte attraktive Leute, um die Gruppe auf der Bühne zu präsentieren. Bei Silver Convention wäre natürlich ein Streicherorchester besser gewesen, da sich der Gesang auf ein Minimum reduzierte, aber das war den Produzenten Silvester Levay und Michael Kunze (alias Stephan Prager) wohl zu teuer und darum wurden die ohnehin bei Jupiter unter Vertrag stehenden Sängerinnen (s. o.) für die Präsentation im TV gewählt. Warum nicht die Originalstimmen ist bis heute wohl eher ungeklärt. Die Single Fly, Robin, Fly wurde dann die erste deutsche Produktion, die es in den USA auf Platz 1 der Billboard-Charts schaffte und danach ging der Erfolg mit diesem Lied weltweit weiter. Eine weitere Single aus der LP war wohl Always Another Girl/I Like It, die habe ich aber seinerzeit nie irgendwo gesehen. Der Nachfolger von Fly, Robin, Fly wurde dann das neu produzierte Get Up And Boogie, das dann auch (wie auch das gleichnamige Album) von Penny, Ramona und Linda eingesungen wurde. Als Bonustracks hat man die etwas sinnlosen 12"-Versionen von Fly, Robin, Fly und Tiger Baby hinzugefügt. Sinnlos insofern, als das Fly, Robin, Fly lediglich um einmal mehr Fly, Robin, Fly, Up, Up To The Sky und ein drittes Mal das Streicherintermezzo verlängert wurde, das gleiche gilt für Tiger Baby, das einfach nur durch endlose Wiederholungen von 4:16 auf fast 9 Minuten in die Länge gezogen wurde. Dabei ist einmal bei Why Are You So Lazy auch noch ein brutaler Schnitt zu hören, der einen geradezu erschrecken lässt. Auf diese Zugaben hätte ich auch gut verzichten können, da wäre mir die anders gemixte Singleversion von Save Me lieber gewesen, der das gesamte Saxophon-Intermezzo fehlte und die auf meiner Single auch etwas anders klingt, was aber auch am Vinyl liegen kann. Dennoch gebe ich diesem Produkt 5 Sterne, schon der Veröffentlichung selbst wegen, aber auch, weil dieses Album und auch die Alben Get Up And Boogie und Madhouse zu meinen Lieblings-LPs dieser Zeit zählen. Nun hoffe ich natürlich, dass sich BBR auch den weiteren 4 LPs dieser Gruppe erbarmt und sie zum Ende der CD-Zeit doch noch neu veröffentlichen wird. Also Fans, kauft diese Edition, auch wenn Ihr die 1992-CD habt. Der Klang ist gut gemastered und wenn viele bestellen, können wir auf das Wunder weiterer Releases hoffen!

This is the first LP from Silver Convention, often called "Save Me" because of the first track.There are two bonus tracks on this CD, 'Fly Robin, Fly' and 'Tiger Baby', both of which are the full 12" disco versions.BBR have really gone to town on producing this CD for us. The disc mirrors the colouring of the original LP (Midland International) - which I really like. The booklet is amazingly informative. Although I knew the tracks on the LP, I never knew who sang them (Gitta Walther, Roberta Kelly, Lucy Neale and Betsy Allen) and there are stories about how they came today, their history, and that none of them toured as the group, but a trio of others (Jacqueline Nemorin, Ramona Wulf and Linda G Thompson) began, although Nemorin left quickly to be replaced by Penny McLean.The liner notes contain some lovely photographs, and interestingly, discographical annotation - providing details of the release of the LP and singles, in Germany and the position in the charts of these.I hope that BBR continue releasing these wonderful hidden gems - all of which are priced very competitively.
