Medium book on Pakistan
SirAs the book by Ayesha Jalal is published outside Pakistan, some credibility is maintained by the author. This is not the best book but it is medium book on the history of Pakistan. It is very unfortunate that since the death of Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the democracy was banished from Pakistan and more over from the death of Mr Liakat Ali Khan the only Prime Minister of Pakistan who held some clout. The entire period from the death of Mr Liakat Ali Khan, the military comprising only army ruled Pakistan directly or indirectly. For Pakistan, it was good period in its history, when General Mohammad Ayub Khan ruled the nation although he was a dictator but there was economic progress in Pakistan. It was Mr Julfikar Ali Bhutto who derailed General Mohammad Ayub Khan government and later misguided the General Mohammad Yahya Khan and it resulted in dismemberment of Pakistan. After that Mohammad Zia Ul Haq made Pakistan a complete islamic state from modern state. Later General Musarruf plundered the nation. He destroyed the judiciary, ruled illegally, and extended his own term in collusion with other generals. Now what a pity! That Pakistan is on the brink of collapse, no human rights, army is law and all in all. It has sustained it's supermacy and no government has been able to complete its term .Until and unless people struggle to finish army supermacy, it is very difficult for Pakistan to establish democracy, rule of law, economic progress, independent judiciary, and impartial civil services. It is likely that Pakistan may again break. The printing is good, the paper is also good and more over the cost is very reasonable. There are no mistake except one at page no page 401 it should be Mantonama while it is written as Mantorama. I hope in the next edition it would be corrected. I recommend this book for international relations and to general readers also to know about Pakistan and it's plight.

Learning the truth about Pakistan.
A great and timely book by the MaCarthur genius awards winner, and one of the most knowledgeable historians of South Asian and especially Pakistani history. This is the latest in her series of books on Pakistani history. She has been working hard to correct the distortions and outright lies taught in educational institutions, propagated through the media and supported by the Pakistani elites including the military. Her books, including this one, are scholarly but written with a style and powerful passion about her subject, that make them hard to put down. This book covers Pakistan's struggle to acquire an identity, and nationhood, from its inception as an idea, through partition, up to the present. I strongly recommend this book as required reading for anyone seriously interested in Pakistani and South Asian history.

Great explanation about Pakistan
The author has explained the fiasco of Pakistan. The country does not have political and economic stability. Even the moral and ethical vale’s are very low.

What a useless book
It is depressing to see a prominent historian Ayesha Jalal make a weak case for liberalism in Pakistan. Her key argument is that Pakistan will not radicalise due to two factors: (a) the state and political class never meant the country to be theocratic and thus their repeated use of religion aught to be taken as utilitarianism, and (b) there are other things happening in Pakistan like art, music and literature which means that it will contest radical space. Wonder which world she lives in because liberal space has shrunk considerably over the past 67 years. There are many a times in the book one begins to wonder if the entire thing could be said in fewer words.
