Memoir of a Jewish Polish teenager surviving World War II in Warsaw.
The author was a bright Jewish teenager in Warsaw when Germany attacked Poland in 1939, starting World War II. She survived, and many years after the war ended wrote a very moving and detailed story of her family, starting with their comfortable life before the war, describing how they lived in the Warsaw Ghetto, the escape and hiding when Nazis decided to finish off Ghetto survivors. Hair raising stories. At the same time, it is a coming of age story of an exceptional, strong and resourceful girl, who has teenage crushes under these incredible circumstances. She paints a wide picture about people she met during the war, some very wonderful righteous people, but also scum, profiteers and traitors. She writes very down to earth prose.

Good read
True story of Zygmunt Bauman's wife. With their first hand experience, it explains to a degree why his book on the Holocaust rings so true.
