PENGUIN How to Go to Work: The Honest Advice No One Ever Tells You at the Start of Your Career

Essential Reading
I started this book thinking I’d probably skim and scan it, read the odd chapter here and there. But it’s so well written, engaging and enlightening that I ended up reading it more or less cover to cover. It’s actually one of those marvellous books that you feel should always have been part of the employment scene, the lexicon. The authors have drawn on their own wide experience and that of many others to bring together an employment bible for anyone soon to enter the workplace; it should be required reading and available in all schools, colleges and universities. But it's no 'dry tome' - the style is informative but with a lightness of touch that makes it a pleasure to read.Though mainly aimed at work newbies, it’s also a useful reference volume for anyone at any point in his or her career – the chapters are clear and easy to refer to whether you’re wondering how best to. for example, negotiate a pay rise, tender your resignation, or deal with a difficult colleague. Whatever you need to know, it’s all available here. Any number of workplace situations, problems and dilemmas are addressed clearly, without jargon and with great advice, warmth and wisdom. Thoroughly recommended.

All the information you need to know if you're new to industry... helped me a lot in preparing for my placement and job opportunities fresh out of university. Great read to help close the gap in between education and real life work, to put what you know into practise and networking tips. Informative about the whole process, from online brand presence and interview tips to actually navigating company culture, whilst being clear and easy to read.

Empowering resource for new starters and business owners
This is a hugely useful book for anyone starting work. It provides practical, easy to follow advice and inspiration to help you thrive in your career. As someone who regularly hires new graduates, it's also given me a better understanding of where we should provide increased support. We plan to give a copy to everyone in our company, whether they are a new starter, or an experienced manager who needs to nurture talent.
