Worked well, more than what I needed for personal use
I bought this with the intention of making chalk paint and experimenting a bit. I think the product is good however I found it hard to mix out the lumps to get an even texture but I found that if you take a little bit of paint, mix it with the chalk paint additive in a little container, and keep mixing until it's smooth, it's much easier to add back to a larger amount of paint. I didn't need too much of the additive as I was only experimenting with stenciling, etc but the amount that comes in the bag is enough to mix, I believe, a gallon of paint.I've also tried making my own paint additive with adding plaster of Paris to paint and it has more or less the same effect except that the plaster of Paris ends up leaving little white specks in the paint (visible in darker colors). That being said, I am curious to know what's in this product as it seemed to work and it's a heck of a lot cheaper than buying chalk paint. I recommend to anyone looking for a quality paint additive.

Need an alternative to that expensive chalk paint?
I have used Annie Sloan chalk paints with previous projects, and each time my hubby complains about the hefty price per can. I suppose that makes sense - why would you spend $40 on a can of paint to refurbish a $2 chair from the Goodwill outlet? So, while searching for alternatives, I came across this additive. We decided to use it while furnishing my daughter's house, as she was doing it entirely from upcycled furniture found in yard sales and thrift stores. We bought the small sample sizes of paint from home depot ($2 for about 12 oz) and mixed in approx 2 T of powder per can. The powder is a bit difficult to mix in, so in some cases we added a bit of water. Though the mixture can appear lumpy, it goes on pretty smooth and covers everything well, even without sanding. stripping or priming. No more than two coats needed. Drying time is quick, comparable to Annie Sloan, and for finishes we used either minwax or stain and polyurethane. Positives to this vs Annie Sloan - 1) cheaper, 2) can mix smaller amounts of many different colors of paint. Negatives - goes on slightly less uniform than the AS paint, though that may have been due to our poor mixing skills. With one bag we've done 8 chairs, a large oak dining table, two end tables, one coffee table, three occasional tables....and have more than 2/3 of a bag left.

Not bad but not great
I used this on some furniture and it worked but not any better than my own DIY recipe using plaster of paris or unsanded grout. I bought it hoping it would be smoother but it turned out the same and ended up costing me about the same as a whole box of plaster of paris or grout that I get a lot more than one gallon of paint out of.I would have liked better instructions on the packaging - like whether to use a mask when mixing (I did anyway) and is it toxic to me or my pets.It did the job but not any better than my own mix.

Chalk Paint Poweder Additive
I can say that we have used this product so far on one piece of our furniture and for now seem to like the product. We only tested this out in our Antique White color, but plan to try it in our new deep blue color to see how we like it.We have been asked by Annie Sloan to use her paint to compliment our furniture and in return she would provide us with some paint to use as per marketing. The only thing wrong with that is if we commit to her paint we can not use any other products but hers which limits us to colors for our customers. We as well as yourself are a small business owner trying to get our Boutique up and running. By chance is we purchased a couple Additive bags would you be open to a discount for us? Please feel free to check out our work on Facebook at Kiley's Boutique.Maybe this would be a good business opportunity for the both of us.Thanks again for sharing this product with us.

buy real chalk paint instead
This additive does make the paint thicker but it also makes it clumpy. I used a small amount and stirred it very well but I could not get the tiny clumps out. In the end I was happy with the project but not because of this product. I wish I would have bought real chalk paint as a primer and used the color of regular paint I wanted. It made a brand new set of end tables look old and repainted. Threw out the rest.

Great Product, Works Well
This chalk paint powder additive did everything the manufacturers said it would do. It dissolved very quickly in a small amount of water. After this dissolved, I stirred it into a jar of high quality acrylic, semi-gloss white paint. It blended in very well. I used a glass jar with a tight fitting lid for this. It made an excellent and inexpensive chalk paint. I used two coats and it dried quickly between coats. This 'chalk paint' responded well to light sanding, and steel wool, which I used to obtain a 'distressed look' on my wooden tray. I then used a paste wax brown shoe polish with an old rag to darken the painted tray and give it an old look. It buffed up to a beautiful shine. I especially like the fact that by using this chalk paint powder additive, I can inexpensively make up my own individual colors of chalk paint for different projects. My wife mixed the product with a small amount of water, the semi-gloss white paint (Behr) and then added a small amount of inexpensive acrylic paint, like you can buy for under a dollar a bottle at Walmart or Michaels. She liked the ease of use and the quality of the chalk paint that it made. Plus the fact that we can mix up a small amount for small projects, such as picture frames.

Very thick and gritty
I am new to chalk painting so I'm am trying out different ways to do it to find the one I like best. I got a sample jar of the very expensive brand that it supposed to be the good standard and found I like one from a big box store better. But, I didn't want to be trapped by their colors, which are limited. I tried this and found it to be very thick and gritty. I used less than the recipe on the bag called for. I had to add water to the paint as it was too thick and didn't dissolve well. I had to put the project aside for a few days and when I went back to the paint, which was in an airtight container, It was so thick I had trouble stirring it and had to add a significant amount of water. Even then it remained very gritty. I bought a jar of calcium carbonate here for less than half the place which did a much better job. I will not buy this agian nor would I recommend it.
