One of the worlds most stable routers at a good price
This router has dual cores at 1.8. Its fast, snappy and provides speeds up to 650 mbps over wireless. It works stable when paired in multiple nodes. Highly recommend this one. I have installed about 200 of this exact model in various locations and so far (about 3 years) I haven't heard any issues with this model.

A good to have home router with advanced parental control and upgraded firewall
I received the latest version of this model AC1900P. The router's performance is pretty good. I was using AC51u and upgraded to this model. The features are really useful. The adaptive QoS and parental control has enhanced features when compared to other models that I had used in the past. The AI protection feature also looks nice for a home router. The advanced processor and more memory helps in getting true HD streaming. The hardware quality is very good and unit comes with a 2year warranty from Asus.

Wonderful Router - great performance
Router is very easy to install firmware and set up - no fuss - the user interface is the easiest i have ever seenwireless range is great - wired performance is topdisk sharing works greatrouter gets a little hot - but not a major issuebest i have seen for controlling "family" devices and internet access for the young ones. can't get easier than that - no need for multiple "rules" - just set start and end time and that's it.

Bad Product
Bought on 20th August and stopped working on 31st August 2022. No powering even. Don't know if the supplier was not good or the product itself is bad. Will not recommend this.

Fast and capable, with a great UI made even better when using Merlin's.....
I was a little hesitant at first to buy this router. I typically love an Asus UI, especially with a Merlin firmware. As my primary need was for a VPN client this newly launched router seemed to have everything needed to make it a super fast capable router when being used with a AES 256bit CBC encrypted data signal. Well it turns out that this router with its super fast optimised dual core CPU is certainly up to the task. With its ease of setup, using the Merlin firmware, as a VPN client, it is very simple to apply policy based routing. Having devices running through the WAN or the tunnel of the VPN connection, wit ha kill switch, is very easy. As is port forwarding.Using a smart connection for the excellent Wi-Fi, to combine both the 2.4ghz and 5ghz into one SSID, and then the router allocates the appropriate band to each device, is also both easy to setup and very effective. There is much more to this router but the little that I have touched on went to convince me that it is a very impressive buy for our needs.I never did like using DD-WRT or a pf sense box, my brain is far too feeble to cope or manage with those. So far I am very very happy with the excellent throughput of this router and its massive list of features.Merlin described it as being .....So basically, expect around 200 Mbps of throughput (I doubt the GT-AC5300's extra cores will make any real difference, OpenVPN being single threaded). That's about 4x faster than the RT-AC68U, and probably around 3x faster than the RT-AC88U/RT-AC3100/RT-AC5300.and someone noted with their fast VPN connection.....Based on those results I added only the rcv buffers as the snd buffers lowered the upload speeds.DL: 223 MbpsUL: 233 MbpsThe single highest values: DL: 228 Mbps UL: 262 MbpsExcellent router so far.

ASUS RT-AC5300 Tri-Band 4x4 Gigabit Wireless Gaming Router with AiProtection
We spent years renting a router from our (Icelandic) internet provider, it was actually ridiculous because it was a cheap sh***y one that we pretty much paid for a hundred times over. We paid for the best internet our provider could give us...except they never updated our router in all those years, nor did they offer us better equipment and our download/upload speed was constantly throttled since we are a family of 5, all gamers..We never even realized how important the router was to internet speed, trusting our provider for that sorta thing...One day we decided to buy our own because over time we'd actually save money. We looked around and settled on this one. It looked really snazzy and the red/black theme totally complemented my Deadpool themed rig. Got curious so did a speedtest the other day. My usual Download speed hovered around 100mbps and my uploads less than that. The new speedtest is pictured, but just in case you can't see the image properly. My new download speed is 929.69 mbps and my upload speed is 942.57 mbps. When we returned the old router to the internet provider they were all like "ahhh you shoulda told us man, we would have given you better equipment"...yeah right, bleep you, bleephole, you should have told us you had better equipment since we're your customers and all that...hence we also switched provider cos the new provider gave our kids unlimited internet on their phones.....sweeeeeet.

Fantastic router, but with sonos needs some tweaking!!
Love this Router and the user interface for setting it up! Used this to replace my terrible virgin Hub 3.0 and I'm not disappointed....now!Would have got 5 stars but jeeeeez have I had to do some researching for the 2.4GHz band!! Caused absolute mayhem for my Sonos and other smart home devices and it was continually dropping out! The devices could only connect for 2 minutes before being booted! So a few settings for people to bear in mind if you have the same issues1. Beam forwarding isn't required! Disable it! You need compatible devices in order for it to work anyway!2. The above should disable MU-Mimo. Again it's more of a future proof (or so I gather)3. DISABLE AIR TIME FAIRNESS!! Constantly kicks devices that aren't actually using the connection, i.e. My sonos speakers and smart home devices.4. Enable the IGMP snooping protocols. Apparently allows devices that are in a group (e.g. My sonos) to communicate with each other, but only one of them is the one that communicates with the internet (or something along those lines)5. Select a channel and 20MHz frequency band - I chose channel 6 for the 2.4GHz band and change the 20/40MHz to just 20MHz. Basically channels 1, 6 and 11 are the only channels that don't overlap with each other. Therefore the most likely to have no interference from neighbours. If your neighbour have chosen 6, choose 1 or 11.The above can be found under wireless and professional tab.Hope this helps people or at least gives you something to google if you've got issues!!Once this was sorted, the router has been absolutely incredible!! My 5GHz devices have such an incredible speed of internet now!

Great when working but failing after 16 months
This review is for the Asus RT-AC86U. It’s very hard know which review is for what model here as Amazon appear to have lumped many other model’s reviews together.I saved down my configuration from my old RT-AC68 (inc DDNS account) and set up the 86U, installed new Merlin firmware and then uploaded settings saved from 68U (isp login, IPTV settings, and Wi-fi settings. Static IPs had to be manually input. Rebooted and everything worked perfectly.WiFi coverage is significantly improved. We have a Squeezebox radio down in our yard some 65ish feet away from the router (2 internal brick walls, a garden followed by another brick wall to get through) and reported 2.4Ghz strength has gone from ~30% to ~40%. Strength throughout the house (medium sized) is excellent on both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands. Lots of wired clients too (two switches connected) and no issues as expected.Very happy so far. I will update my review should this change.Update 2nd Sept 2019. Returned as the 2.4Ghz Wifi is failing with many clients failing to connect and awful speeds if they do manage to connect. A quick internet search confirms that this is a common hardware fault so I did not want to chance a replacement. Shame as really liked this router.

doesn't have ai mesh as of feb 2018
Be careful with the RT-AC87U. As of Feb 2018 Asus has announced that many of its routers will have AI Mesh. This router is not on the list and I have returned it for the 86U. To be fair I can see little difference between the 87 and 86 having carried out speed tests with both of them. But the AI mesh made the difference for me. I figured if asus hasn't done it for the 87u at the beginning there was little chance it would get the upgrade - and even if it did for the difference in price (when you figure you keep these routers for several years) it was worth going for the newer 86u.I was upgrading from the 66 which I bought several years ago. You will notice that the interface is similar but it moves much faster on the new models and there are some things it does much better - limiting bandwiths etc
