50/50 Monologues for Student Actors--Volume 1

I bought these to use with my first-year drama students! They are a great resource for quick-to-memorize scenes! Highly recommended for students who are just exploring their dramatic side!

I bought this for my drama class. Since I've been using it, everyone has asked me where I find such relevant and interesting monologues. This book is my best kept secret.

I am fairly perplexed at all the positive reviews, that made me think that buying this book was a good idea. I assume they are not coming from experienced Drama teachers. This book offers a lot of monologues, and does a good job at varying comedy/drama, but is problematic for several reasons. First, the book is divided into two based on gender and offers a lot of cliched gender stereotypes. Also, I would not recommend this collection for performers over 13 as these "teenagers" seem fictional. Language is antiquated and completely out of touch with how many 15-18 year olds actually talk/think. All the characters seem to speak in a similar voice, that I assume reflects the authors own. While the lack of depth/subtext in most of the monologues means it could work for younger performers, the length of many mean that they won't quite work for them either. Consequently, I find it to be an awkward resource, I'll likely not use.

The material in this book is sure to appeal to young, aspiring actors! The content of the monologues touches on matters that face contemparary tweens and teens and I am certain that they will find it easy to relate to and easy to embrace in a class or on stage. Bravo!

This book works very well for my purposes. Nice variety of characters and tone. Very appropriate for HS students. Good mix of comedy and drama. After searching through stacks of monologue books for well written original monologues, I'm very pleased with the quality of this book. Highly recommended.

Sure to resonate with young actors, the monologues contained in these pages are chock-full of humor, wit, and irony. They'll undoubtedly be as much fun to act out on the stage as they will be to watch. Highly recommened!!!
