The Wycliffe Bible: John Wycliffe's Translation of the Holy Scriptures from the Latin Vulgate Hardcover – April 1, 2009

Original spelling, very happy with purchase, a must have for your bible collection. It's hard to decipher but i like the historical accuracy.

The print is small and you need to have the KJV while you read to translate archaic words. It's worth it!

This is a great book to read. Especially since it has inspired many other Bible versions that came later. My only gripe is that it is not complete. The original Wycliffe bible included the apcropha. The publisher decided to leave that out. But they also included a letter at the end, which is not included in other bibles. This book is mostly, historically correct. If you want the true and complete Wycliffe Bible, look elsewhere. If you just want a Bible for comparison, this one will work.

Disregard the one star review others left for this fine product! So long as you realize that Wycliffe lived during the time of Chaucer, then you should be well prepared for this fine translation. As an historian, it is remarkable to read a text so often disregarded by the general public, and one cannot help but feel the gravity of the piece when one realizes that people lost their lives for owning this 700 years ago.This printing is tightly bound and clearly printed. No errors yet, but I'm not all the way through, yet. 5 stars, all the way!

Every serious student of English Bible history and translation history can appreciate the translation of John Wycliffe. He was excommunicated and risked his life to give us the first Bible ever translated into English. He was hated so much for providing the layperson with a translation in their own language that, after he had been dead for over 40 years, the church ordered him to be dug up, for his remains to be burned, and his ashes were thrown in the Swift River. Wycliffe was a hero of the Faith and his English translation from the Latin Vulgate is a piece of history. I’m proud to have it on my shelf.

The John Wycliffe Bible is somewhat difficult to read, but definitely maintains its significance. I bought it to do some research for a college course and found that the Douay-Rheims version adapted a part of Wycliffe's translation. KJV eventually borrowed from Douay-Rheims, so in a sense, Wycliffe's work found its way into more modern-day Bible translations.

I bought this expecting it to be an exact replication of John Wycliffe's translation. It is not. It was decided that some of the books in the original Wycliffe Bible should be taken out because they didn't fit into "biblical canon". This bothers me deeply. I understand that you might not agree that its canon, but from a historical stand point it is important that this text remain in as close to its original form as possible, non-canon books and all. I would have been fine with "this is not considered canon" in parenthesis under the title of said books. Some people might have gotten the book looking specifically for those books. I am a little annoyed by introduction and the writing on the back cover. Kind of takes away the "Bible feel" of it, but I can over look that. The absence of the books that were in the Latin Vulgate, but not in the King James version I can't overlook, therefor it gets three stars instead of the five I would have given. If Lamp Post released a full Wycliffe translation of the Latin Vulgate without the introduction in the beginning and with a bare back cover I would gift this Bible to a friend and rebuy this, but until then, I'm going to be annoyed that I'm reading a censored version of the Wycliffe's Bible.

Amazon has copied over the reviews for the smaller type and smaller physical size version of this book. The reviews about the content are still correct, but the ones about small type are no longer true for this larger type size version. This is a very high quality photo reproduction of an original printing, including the ancient English language and spelling. It takes a while to get used to it. If you get stuck on a word, you can read the verse in a modern language Bible and most of the time figure out what the Wycliffe word is and means.
