There are box sets and then there are BOX SETS. John Mayall’s ‘The First Generation 1965-1974 set sits firmly in the latter category, being substantial both in the artefacts contained within and the superb music it encompasses. It is the first time a set of this size has been released documenting John Mayall’s early years and, not only does it have all the albums from his much lauded formative career, but it also contains unreleased tracks aplenty. Featuring Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Harvey Mandel, Blue Mitchell, Jon Mark and many more outstanding musicians, this mammoth package contains 35 CDs plus a beautiful hardback book and much more. Not for nothing did John Mayall earn the moniker ‘Godfather of the British Blues’. For a short but compelling time in the ‘60s and ‘70s he recognised raw talent when he saw it, he took it in, he nurtured it, and everyone thrived and benefitted as the result. Many of the best musicians of the period passed through the hallowed ranks of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, and all are on show here in a stunning set crammed with musical highlights. Put together with John Mayall’s full co-operation, the full list of contents is as follows: · 35 discs, including 3 CD Singles & 8 previously unreleased discs, alongside newly remastered versions of the original Decca & Polydor albums. · Music from seven unreleased gigs (including Windsor 1967, Gothenburg 1968, Berlin 1969 and San Francisco 1970). · 28 unreleased BBC tracks featuring Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor. · Photograph individually signed by John Mayall himself · Hardback book including many rare photos and memorabilia plus a full gig listing for the period. · Separate book including two years of fan club letters and correspondence. · Two replica posters - Ten Years Are Gone and tour poster from 1968. · Replica press pack for John Mayall Plays John Mayall.

Keystone of British Blues rock
This was a box set I had read about quite a few times in different places, so I knew roughly what to expect, a thorough trawl through the archives of John Mayall up to the mid 70’s. I was also in possession of a few Amazon vouchers, so I went ahead and ordered it.So, why should you buy it?First class box set. Obviously a labour of love. This was done for the serious fans who already have albums by Jon Mayall. The attention to detail is staggering.Great book, well written and illustrated. His dairies, including details such as the only time JM had to play the national anthem was at a show in Northern Ireland. First and last time. Better than that, a recording of the event is amidst the CDs.The CDs sound superb. Even if you already have some of these albums I seriously doubt if they sound as good as these versions. I already had Bare Trees, the “Beano” album, Blues From the Laurel Canyon and they don’t sound as good as they do here.Sublime mastering of the CDs allows even rough cassette audience recordings sound their best.In short, one of the best box sets I have ever bought

Superb box set for diehard Bluesbreakers fans!
This is a beautifully presented box set, if heavy and rather bulky. I imagine that it will only really appeal to diehard Mayall fans, who will probably already own most, if not all, of the officially released albums. Being in that position myself I thought long and hard before parting with £200. However, I’m not disappointed. The “coffee table” book is wonderful, and contains quite a few photos I’ve not seen before (and I thought I’d seen pretty much all of them!). There is also a lot in there to read. There is a great deal to read in the book containing the fan club newsletters as well, which I’m also looking forward to reading, as no doubt they will contain lots of “inside” information from those times. The box set also includes a nice personally signed photo of John Mayall. With 5,000 of them to sign, I don’t suppose he did them all in one go. Indeed, on my one the signature is slightly wonky - probably not surprising if he was doing a hundred or so at each session. It’s definitely his signature though! We also have 2 full size concert posters. As others have said, the cds are very nicely packaged, just like the original vinyl LPs I bought back in the day. Of course, it also contains a wealth of live and BBC recordings, but not all are unreleased. However, there are plenty of tracks that most listeners will not already have, including 10 from the Green, Fleetwood, McVie lineup that were not on the 3 Live 1967 albums that were issued over the past 2 or 3 years. I have to say that Mick Taylor really shines - not that Clapton and Green don’t on their live stuff; I’m probably saying that because there are more live CDs featuring Taylor than there are of the other two. Overall, although pricey, I think this is a superb document of 9 years of the Bluesbreakers, and a great tribute to Mayall himself, who is 90 years old in 2 days time! One thing to note - on the cd Thru The Years, the track Suspicions pt2 is not actually that track at all, but Gasoline Blues (from the album Latest Edition - probably Mayall’s worst album!).

Consistently excellent
A superb box set covering John Mayall's most successful period, 1965-1974. 35 CDs in total (32 full-length plus an EP and two 7" singles on separate CDs). There's also a very detailed book (if rather heavy) covering his life as well as a recording breakdown for every CD, a really nice signed photo, facsimile fan club newsletters, posters and press release. The music itself is remarkably consistent throughout the whole period, despite the ever changing personnel. If you've already got most of the original records it might not be worth the price just for the extras, but for someone like me who only ever had the Clapton and Green LPs it's been great to pick out CDs at random and discover a lot of great music I'd never heard before. And for once it's a box set that comes in a really strong box, unlike many others.

No Detail Spared
This set is nice to have & especially if you are a John Mayall fan from way back.My only criticism is that with so many CD's & quite a large book & more - the package is somewhatheavy. Unlike other Artist CD sets this one is bulky & possibly difficult to store.Importantly also the CD's would have been better placed at the back of the book with special slots provided.I have seen this with other boxed sets & it is much better. The music itself is superb.
