Very sharp knives
Nice sharp knives, good value for the money. Attractive handle patterns to choose from. Comparable to the high dollar knives. Perfect gift for the home cook or chef of the family.

Good knife for the price
Right out of the package (after hand washing, of course), this knife is incredibly sharp. I cruised through peppers and carrots with almost equal ease. It seems well-balanced and well-made with a full length tang. One indication that this is a less expensive knife is the lack of a bolster (the thick band of steel between the blade and handle – see the smaller knife in the picture). The bolster serves to balance the knife and prevents your hand from contacting the blade if you slip. The blade is also not as thick as some more expensive knives. Comparing two of our knives, this Sabatier blade was 1 mm thick compared to another, more expensive knife that was 2 mm thick. That makes this knife a bit more flexible; the blade more “bendy”. The handle on the chef’s knife is acrylic. It is comfortable to hold and use. I gave this item a 4-star rating because there are better made knives available, but at higher cost. The knife is larger than it looks in the Amazon advertisement. I expected to get a utility knife, but as you can see from the picture, this is truly a chef’s knife, longer and wider in the blade than a utility knife. The description of an 8 inch knife describes the length of the blade, not the entire knife, again as you can see from the picture.NOTE: If you are familiar with the Sabatier name, beware that this knife is NOT the same as the Sabatier knives made in France by a number of manufacturers (see picture; the comparison knife is a 35 year old French Sabatier knife). Apparently, Sabatier is not a registered brand name. This knife is sold by Lifetime Brands (Garden City, NY) and Made in China. This company also has the Farberware®, KitchenAid®, Mikasa®, and Pfaltzgraff® brands, among others. Searching online to get some clarity regarding the quality of the Sabatier knives from Lifetime Brands, I found an article where the manufacturer describes their knives as “fully forged” which is a characteristic of French Sabatier knives. If anyone is interested in more information on these topics, I suggest you check Wikipedia or Google it.It’s important that you pay attention to the manufacturer’s care instructions. As they say in their ad, “These knives are not suitable for the dishwasher.” Even though the knife is high carbon stainless steel (a term if used on a knife forum will probably get you into a knife fight!), the instructions are clear that the knives should be washed by hand and DRIED after each use, otherwise it may rust or discolor.Regardless of source, heritage, and ease of cleaning, I stand by my comments about what a joy it is to use this knife. At 1/10 the price of some French Sabatier knives, this is a steal. The true test of its value will only come with time. If the handle holds up, the rivets keep the handle tight, and the blade takes and holds an edge, then this will prove to be a great buy. Washing and drying the knife after each use is a small price to pay for a good knife that should work well for a long time if cared for properly. This may not be a GREAT knife, but it is certainly a very GOOD knife with a price that reflects its quality.

My new favorite knife
This paring knife is really sharp and balanced for easy use. Cuts easily through a tomato or a tough piece of meat. My new favorite knife.

Beautiful Knife
This Sabatier Stainless Steel Serrated Utility Knife, 5 inches, is so pretty!! The handle is a marbleized black, almost like mother of pearl. I was really impressed with it when I opened it. There is a sticker on the blade that says "Hand Wash Only, Dry Immediately." So, now I'll have to dry it as soon as I wash it. I hand wash my knives and lots of dishes, so that isn't a problem, but I usually let them air dry. Bummer, I have to dry it off myself! The first thing I tried to cut was an onion. I was dicing onion to go on our Brats. It cut okay, but not as well as I expected because the blade felt as sharp as could be to my fingers! I wasn't overly impressed with its cutting ability. Now, to be fair, I was using a small plastic cutting board as I didn't want to get out my large bamboo cutting board for a fourth of an onion. I think cutting on the wooden cutting board would have made a lot of difference. The serrated blade seemed to "drag" on the plastic. I'm looking forward to cutting some more things with this knife and verifying that the cutting board was what made the difference.Perhaps I should have waited a day to write this review, but I try to write my reviews as promptly as I can. I was also excited about this knife as it is so pretty!! Oh, I forgot to tell you that they even protected the tip of the blade with a tiny plastic cover. I guess it was for me, because it wasn't going to move in the package. It was the hardest item to get out of its package that I have EVER seen!! It took me a good 5-10 minutes to get it out!! Prepare yourself to work to get it open, but it will be worth it!!I am giving this knife a very positive recommendation because I have faith that the cutting board was what made the difference. If not, I will amend my review. So, buy it, you'll see what I mean about how attractive it is!!
