Mrs. Spring Fragrance: A Collection of Chinese-American Short Stories (Dover Literature: Short Stories)

I really get a sense of cultural distinction from Sui Sin Far's stories - they're diverse, tragic, and funny at points. These stories will remain with me long after I finish reading Mrs. Spring Fragrance.

This is a faithful reproduction of the short story collection. It does not include anything else that you might expect in a scholarly "reprint" edition. There's an opportunity here to add historical context and biographical information on the author. I'm taking a class on Asian-American Literature, and we supplemented the short stories with editorials from Harper's Weekly and a short memoir by Sui Sin Far, "Leaves from the Mental Portfolio of An Eurasian".

I did not like the book, Mrs. Spring Fragrance by Sui Sin Far, but I’m making, an effort to read books about other cultures to expand my understanding of people whose cultures are very different from mine.I did learn that the date of the Chinese New Year is determined by the Chinese lunar calendar. The date changes every year but is always somewhere in the period from January 21st to February 20th.Mrs. Spring Fragrance is a collection of Chinese American Short Stories first published in 1912 and reprinted in 2013. The stories were a bit weird and did not present much that I could relate to.After reading this book and books about other cultures, I surmise that most people are the same when it comes to good and bad choices that people make. One of the characters in the stories alluded to the Christian Holy Bible being a good book full of wisdom.

Good cultural read.

The author created a beautiful text in this tragically beautiful set of short stories involving the ways in which Asian peoples and Asian Americans face difficulties in America in respect to culture shock. It was a bit too dark for me.
