Small elderly animals would be OK
The unit, shown covered, is deceptive. It is made from wood and wood products, you assemble it with screws. When I saw how flimsy it is, I made sure to glue all the mating parts together. It should handle dog's weight @ 20-30 pounds, but I wouldn't trust it beyond that. The stair carriage is 3/16" MDF, while the treads (steps) are 3/16" MDF attached to 1.0" x 0.5" softwood boards, which the screws go into. There is one additional board that runs across the bottom of the stair carriage, side to side, for additional support. There are no risers.I suppose if you felt energetic about this, you could improve the overall quality by adding a few pieces of 1.0" x 2.0" to the inside, for support and stiffness.I haven't been able to get the cover over the assembled steps.

Cheap is as cheap does....
The steps require assembly, didn't see that in the advertising. Wasn't hard to assemble. Only needed screwdriver. Pieces fit together fine. All holes pre-drilled. The cover is my point of contention. It doesn't fit in a neat manner, it's not properly fitted, it looks sloppy and ill-fitting, looks terrible. Makes the whole stair look cheap and tacky. I used a staple gun to stretch it properly and secure. But, now I won't be able to remove and clean easily. Also, the stair step platforms are very shallow and my Chihuahuas don't feel secure using. They avoide it completely. I would not buy again. I should have gotten the more expensive ones that had deeper steps.

... with this were not long enough to make it sturdy and secure
The screws that came with this were not long enough to make it sturdy and secure. I had to add finishing nails in each screw spot to make it safe enough for my Chi to climb up it. She loves it now though!

These were not an easy assembly. Thank goodness my dad is a woodworker & could help me build them. He had to drill new holes to make sure it would fit & everything, so beware before purchasing! Other than that, they have held up great over the past 6 months and my pup uses them every day!

Does the trick!
Fairly easy to assemble and I like that the cover is washable. It took my elderly, overweight cat about 3 days to be convinced to use them, being lured by treats. It took him another few days to figure out he could also use them to go back down, rather than jumping, but now he is happy customer, able to nap on the bed whenever he pleases.

Works great for smaller dogs
Works great for smaller dogs, the only downside is, it is kind of cheap. And you have to put it together with nails, it is not shipped together.

Can't Order a Replacement Cover
Works well but the cover wears out and you can't get a replacement cover.

I would have preferred plastic like my other doggy stairs but I guess I didn't ...
These are made of particle board or something which surprised me. I would have preferred plastic like my other doggy stairs but I guess I didn't read the description well enough. Regardless, they do the job just fine. I have an 8 lb poodle so she can't wear out any set of stairs no matter what material is used.
