Can use LARD in this fryer. The answer is YES, I have had a ROTO Fryer for some time, five years but it is not straight forward.
I purchased this item on Oct 19th 2011. That's nearly five years ago - never had a problem with it. I have tried many other deep fryers and none compare overall with this one. The only problem I had was the lid on the oil drainer cup would keep splitting. That is not a consideration with the new model, no oil drainer cup, it drains into a jar or oil holder. I have used the T-fal easy clean and it works very well but does not justify the price over this. It also had problems reaching max temp and holding it - the fryer doesn't have that problem. The Roto fryer uses much less oil than any other fryer of the same capacity, so it is easy to move with oil in it. It reaches temp quickly and also returns to temp after addition of cold food, I guess that's because there is less oil to heat. you can store the oil in use in the fryer. Wish they would make a Digital one, make it easier to see the temp it is at. By far the best deep fryer I have owned and I have had everything from Fry Baby through Fry Daddy and the expensive Bellville Smart Fryer: (which broke after a couple of months). Exceptionally good deep fryer and reasonably priced. It is a little awkward to cook battered food - make sure you dip it in the hot fat before dropping into fryer, or it will stick to the basket., not a real problem because that is what battered food fryers normally do After 5 years using this appliance I still say it is a worthwhile investment if you are not a Fish and Chip aficionado. The oil never gets above 350 F it should be 370 F to really crisp the fish batter but its not bad, edible anyway! I have given up on the lid for the oil container each one they send me has the same problem, but they have now discontinued it anyway. The new friers don't have the shelf and container for oil - you have to use a jug or bottle to catch the oil and filter it your self.

5+ Stars!
Many years ago I bought a fryer almost just like this from QVC and loved it. When I finally died, I searched all over for one that was similar and I finally found it in this De’Longhi Roto Deep Fryer. Just to test it out I made some deep fried tortilla chips and they turned out perfect! I used Vegetable Oil and it heated up to 350 degrees quicker than I expected. My old version of this fryer didn’t have the ‘tilted’ feature, but it works great and uses less oil that way. The window on the top is not of much use as it immediately steams up, but that is no big deal-I expected it. I set the timer for 3 minutes and it worked like a charm frying the chips to perfection. One of the big reasons that I like this fryer is that it doesn’t leave my house with that horrible ‘Greasy Diner’ smell. The carbon filter seems to do a good job with odors, but I did use new oil so we will see how it does with older filtered oil. Clean up was a breeze. After I let the grease cool, I just parked it by the sink with a coffee can to catch the oil from the rubber hose. If I were doing a messy cook, I would place a strainer over the can to catch the loose fried crumbs. Then, I just added soapy water to the fryer, wiped with a rag and drained the water into the sink making sure to thoroughly rinse the soap out, including the hose. I left the hose out to completely dry before storing it away. I know that frying food is not the most healthy option, but it tastes SO good :) This fryer takes the hassle out of deep frying and cleaning up afterwards. If I could give it more that 5 start, I would!

Excellent fryer
Was searching for a replacement fryer... and decided to give this one a try. The chicken comes out amazing and non greasy. Just heat it to temp (light goes out) and add chicken (don't over crowd). The best part of this machine is the amount of oil required to fry. I was able to fit 4 drumsticks in without over crowding. I flipped it halfway through the 20-25 min process. The time chart for the chicken stated 7 min which is misleading cause that's more for nuggets lol. But the end result was perfectly crisped chicken and it was easy to clean and store the oil in an oil canister. Check out the videos for a more detailed example.

Makes frys and tots so easy.
In fact I just had some for lunch. Great unit.. the only reason why I gave it 4 out of 5 was that this is the second one. The first one turned on... started warming up to about 270 degrees and then stopped working. Amazon was great... swapped it out so fast that I thought the old one was still on the porch. The new one... takes about 5-7 minutes to heat up the oil... throw in your favorite items and they are ready in no time. I have been cooking with Olive oil, it does not last as long as some of the other oils... but it is healthier for you and the items fried do not taste as greasy. I did use the drain tube feature.. i like it... so much faster and easier to drain and clean the unit out. Get yourself a screen if you want to reuse the oil you drain out. I hang it over the sink.. put a bowl in the sink and put a frying splatter screen on the bowl and use it as a large/medium particle filter. Unplug the cap off the hose and it drains out nicely. Great feature. No issues with frying unless you are going to fill it up quite a bit and the items have to stack on top of each other. I usually do two runs instead of doing it all at once. If you do load it up, just drop the bottom layer in for 30 seconds and then put the top layer on and then half way through give the items a shake in the basket and use some tongs to separate any pieces that are stuck togeather... and you will be fine by the time it finishes. Enjoy

Works great!
I am a first time fryer and not by accident. I am a grown person, but I have always had a phobia of frying. I’ve been given fryers before, kept them for a period of years, then just always got rid of them because I was too terrified I would start a fire or something else horrific. Finally, I decided I could no longer live without Monte Cristo sandwiches and I got determined about learning how to make them. For a number of reasons, this is the fryer I selected for my small apartment. I am attaching a video and some photos of my first use. As you can see, everything went well! This sandwich takes a very wet batter and I am now convinced that I will be able to fry any battered food. I did spray the basket with cooking spray first, but I think the trick was that I lowered the basket in the oil and let it rotate a few times before dropping in the pieces. Just a tiny bit of batter stuck on one piece, but not even enough that anyone would notice. I just pulled the batter off the basket and stuck it back on that spot. I think you could easily fry small pieces of food one or two at a time without the basket and just scoop them out with a fryer scoop or remove them with tongs. I considered doing that and may try it one day. My method worked just fine, though. I did close the lid some while the sandwich was frying, but it would have been just fine if I had left it up. Yes, the lid had to be up when I dropped the pieces in and yes, I was terrified as I was doing it! But I just sucked it up and did it and it worked just fine :-) I’ll be making another Monte Cristo to share with a friend tomorrow, then I’m planning to experiment with chicken fried steak and maybe even Twinkies in the near future. I have an air fryer for non-battered things so I am planning to use this exclusively for battered foods and other things that can’t go in the air fryer. I did find a couple of guys had posted YouTube videos showing how they fry chicken and even some dumplings in this. Those were incredibly helpful and reassuring. Mostly though, I found the secret with the batter is to lower the basket first then drop the food in the deep end with the oil. I had my fire extinguisher next to me, towels all over the floor and within reach in case I had a spill over, and my heart was pounding, but I made this lovely and delicious sandwich and everything was just fine. Also, I had no excessive steam or smoke, and no bad smells at all. I live in a large apartment building (like a hotel), and I can’t imagine that anyone walking in the hall outside my apartment would know I was frying. That was a major concern for me. I will come back and update if I have any problems going forward but overall, I’m glad I gave this little fryer a chance. If I can use it, I’m quite sure anyone can!

Frying made easy
I LOVE this product. I have used it four times now, and each time it has been easy and delightful to fill and clean. I can get it clean enough to store inside the house in my kitchen gadget closet. My other deep fryer had to live in the garage because I could not clean it as well. This fryer is light weight and effective. It is easy for me to move from one location to the next, even with the oil inside! The first time I fried French fries first, then (with the same oil) I fried rice balls from the freezer (store bought), and one more item that I cannot remember. I do remember everyone was delighted with the results. I emptied and cleaned the device in less than 30 minutes. I did not use the hose attachment, because I was unsure how to, but later my husband showed me that it just pulled out. I cleaned it at the sink once it was emptied and wiped out with paper towels. Second time I made Buffalo Chicken Cheese Balls (recipe courtesy of Bobby Deen.) I made 50 balls, and they were gone by the end of the next day. In this same frying session I cooked over 100 meatballs made with beef and pork. I find when you cook meat the oil gets dirtier more quickly, so I emptied again and cleaned up just as easy as the first time. The chicken cheesy balls were a tester recipe for a house warming party where I had 30 plus people attending. The next day I made 100 more, and waited until the day of the party to fry them (third use). They were a huge hit for our party! As were the meatballs for a Swedish meatball dish. The last time I made over 100 wontons filled with either hoisin chicken, chorizo and cheese or sweet potato and bacon. The latter was the fan favorite. They were also gone be the end of the next day. This batch of oil I used over two consecutive days, because they were wontons so they did not muck up the oil like meat based balls would. Again clean up was easy, as long as you have a good place the put the used oil. We have two acres, so we have a designated area for scrapes such as this. I would hesitate to put this in the trash. My favorite part is the ability to get this product clean enough to store in the house. Secondly, the small quantity of oil needed for a batch.

De Longhi Deep Frier
I used this product for the 1st time and found it easy to use and easy to clean. The food fried to the desired level. Instructions were easy to follow. I loved the oil drainage tube. It made removing the oil a simple process.
