Book and Clinic Helped Me a LOT
Although I don't necessarily agree with Dr. Cowan that virtually all headaches are migraine, his methods and clinic have helped me quite a bit. After reading the book and going to his clinic, I have worked out a treatment plan that has improved my quality of life considerably (I have cluster headaches that are becoming more severe with age). The advice in the book is more sound than what I've seen in most other books and the folks at the clinic are highly professional while still being open to alternative medicine and various approaches. I recommend this book to anyone with chronic headaches.

Great book on how to manage your migraines.
My opinion is a bit biased as I was treated by the author. He's a very knowledgeable physician and has very practical advice especially since he's a migraine sufferer himself.

A must-read! An incredible resource for anyone with migraines or who wants to understand this disease
This book was incredibly helpful for me at a time when my migraines were not under control at all. I was diagnosed with migraines as a young child and periodically they become unmanageable; at one of those times I happened to live near Dr. Cowan's clinic in Ojai (which he has now moved away from), so I bought his book and made an appointment to see him. To say that he has a compassionate and human approach to his patients would be the understatement of the year. Dr Cowan was by far the best migraine specialist I have ever seen, taking into account everything, and when he moved to San Francisco it was a great loss for S. Cal! However, his book remains on my shelf as an incredible resource with its invaluable questionnaires and insights. As Dr Cowan points out, migraines are not simple and there is no easy solution - in fact, no solution at all. They can only be managed, and that involved a multi-prong attack involving lifestyle, preventive medicine, and rescue medicine - I would add, and a great doctor! There is a lot of misunderstanding about migraines, not only what causes them and how to treat them, but the extent of the disability they can cause in people's lives, including the impact on extended family. This book is a HUGE PLUS for the migraine community, and a must read for anyone suffering from migraines or related to someone who does and who wants to understand!.

I bought this book because it was recommended to me by a neurologist
Medical Student here...I bought this book because it was recommended to me by a neurologist. It is a VERY easy read and a great book that I would recommend to people suffering from migraines. It is not an overly complex read with a ton of medical jaron...the author really writes the book for the common reader. It talks about triggers, ways to manage and cope with migraines. I liked it.

Fantastic Book!
Best book out there for managing migraines. Bought it for myself years ago and have continued to purchase it periodically for friends. Excellent resource.

An alternate perspective
While I have found this book to be helpful as a newcomer to migraines, I have found it extraordinarily redundant. I am 60% complete (reading it on the kindle) and and continuing to read it looking for new nuggets but so much of the information is repetitive. In this instance I wish I had bought a physical copy of the book so that I could have flipped through the book as a reference book. The information on medicines, coming up with a multi-level plan and working with my doctor to lay out a treatment plan have been helpful but the author has told me this story no less than a dozen times and hasn't even masked each telling. The story is the same, the chapter numbers just increase. I've found it really annoying and I guess that the author is just trying to drive up the total page numbers? I'd still recommend the book as containing valuable content - but I thought someone should add a balance to the ratings.

Excellent Migraine Program
This book clearly explains how migraines are triggered, methods for addressing them, the dangers of medication overuse, and environmental and lifestyle triggers. It revealed some possible shortcomings of my current treatment and ways to address it.

Food read for anyone who wants to understand their migraines better
Dr Cowan takes this usually neglected subject and weaves a powerful story of living and dealing with migraines - being a migraineur himself. He shows how you can live with migraines (and still have a goos life) using the three step process of lifestyle modification, prevention and rescue. He describes how you can create a support structure using your doctor and your family.
