Arranging for Horns by Jerry Gates Book/Online Audio Paperback – May 1, 2015

This wonderful book is a must-have resource for anyone interested in learning the Berklee method on how to arrange for horns in a contemporary setting. There are plenty of important topics covered here including the instrumental ranges of the saxophones and brass, how to effectively compose for horns in a variety of textural settings, and the application of common and advanced harmonic voicing techniques within a horn arrangement. The written musical examples and audio tracks are excellent and help to reinforce each concept clearly. Jerry has written a very practical and informative guide for all arrangers based on his extensive experience as a professional arranger/composer and as a well-respected educator at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. I highly recommend this book!

this is a very good book for anyone who is starting out arranging horns. it explains a lot of techniques along with the do's and don'ts, several of which I learned the hard way over the years. lets face it, arranging horns isn't for everyone but if you're thinking about it, this book is a good start. even though I been arranging for a few years now, this book clarified some issues I occasionally run into.

Great book. It has a direct and practical point of view, very easy to understand and with good examples. I use the book with my students at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru.

The continued development of arranging techniques available through this text in combination with another Berklee Press book" Modern Jazz Voicings written by Ted Pease and Ken Pullig have boosted my writing options and elevated my practice writing for professional performance.The knowlege has even helped my writing for the theater.

The book is a great resource for beginners and it even has some information useful for more experienced writers. Great book.

What a great book about horn arranging! I graduated Berklee in 2013 and I wish I had this book when I was there! :)

Throughout the book the author uses bass clef for the bari sax. I have NEVER seen a bari part written in bass clef, it's always in treble. The author discusses the range of the various horns (great) however, on p57, he has the tenor playing a low A. Not possible. It only goes to Bb. These are mistakes a book about arranging should not have. It has information that is helpful to beginners but it can also get more advanced which can be not as useful for a beginning arranger. I would have preferred to have it broken up into maybe different levels. Just a sax players take....

I expected to have a lot of examples because this is an audio enhanced book. But the author keeps reusing one of his compositions throughout the book. This is a good refresher for people like me that need to be reminded how the horn section works and the best practises for arranging them.

Arranging for Horns was a very good review for me. I am currently faced with arranging for smaller groups with four or fewer horns. This book helped to deal with instrument voicing and timbre that influence counter melody and vertical ensemble movement. This book may be advanced for the beginner to grasp - but it explains everything well and would help novice arrangers to get started. As advertised - it does what it is supposed to do. Teach! Jerry Gates wrote a great book.

Très content de l'achat. Il y a une mécanique très logique dans l'arrangement des horns qui est très simple à suivre et très bien expliquée dans ce livre. J'avais vu d'autres livres sur le sujet où il parlaient de four way close double lead, et je comprenais très vaguement ce que c'était mais c'était abstrait. Avec ce livre, c'est concret, et pour peu qu'on pratique un peu ce qu'il dit, on comprend comment arranger les cuivres. Je dis ça parce que j'ai acheté la version kindle de ce livre aujourd'hui et jusqu'à présent je n'ai jamais su comment arranger les cuivres, et là j'avais un projet reggae où j'avais besoin de cuivres (d'où l'achat du livre), et en une journée, j'ai pu survoler le livre et lire les passages qui m'intéressaient et arranger mon projet, tout ça en quelques heures, et maintenant, je sais arranger les cuivres jusqu'à la fin de ma vie, donc pour 16€ c'est plutôt kool :)

Metodo per arrangiare le parti degli strumenti a fiato in un gruppo musicale.Sono presenti varie tipologie di sezioni di fiati (big-band, quintetti di ottoni/ance, combo di 3/5 fiati, ecc.).Anche se ricalca un po' le preferenze dell'autore, è comunque un valido riferimento per la stesura di arrangiamenti con voicing articolate e dispiegate. Consigliato agli addetti ai lavori.

Very informative, a useful guide for any musician interested in jazz/rock arranging.
