My class did a project on India and this book was a great read-aloud resource for us! I will continue to use it for years to come.

One of the best book for children...............its USP is not only the beautiful storyline, emotion and language but also its colourful illustrated pages that becomes a child's true companion.

Having read Meeta’s earlier book "The Yellow Suitcase" and having interacted with her, I was eagerly awaiting her next book. "A gift for Amma" did not disappoint. Meera has a knack for words- weaving them together so it touches your heart and leaves you with so much to think about and be grateful for. A gift for Amma is a beautiful story about a little girl looking for a gift for her beloved Amma. Her trip to the market will be filled with nostalgia for those who have experienced something similar and full of wonder for those who have not. The prose is measured and impactful and the illustrations make the story come alive. This is a book to be read and reread for many years. Loved it!

In her previous book Meera dealt with a very tough topic for kids - loss/death of a family member. In this book, she showed she is equally versatile and paints a beautiful picture of a market in India. Her words and the pictures paint a chaotic, colorful and vivid scene of a bazaar. She makes it come alive for those kids who haven't had a chance to see it first hand. As you read, a little girl running around in quest for a meaningful gift for her mom comes alive right in front of your eyes....

Great colors.Great illustrations.There are so many other books that I wish he ALSO would like, but this one is is favorite evening book, so who am I to question that! A little bit of India in our biracial household.
