A must for intermediate music theory
I'm learning piano and starting to reach early intermediate level in playing and in theory, so working alongside my tutor, I purchased this ABRSM grade 3 theory book. This has everything you need to learn at a grade 3 level. It's very clearly laid out and goes through important concepts such as: intermediate rhythms and time signatures, pitch, keys and scales, intervals, triads and sheet music terminology. It goes through with clear explanations, and then lots of exercises to complete for each section, so you can get the information in through both reading and doing. At the back, there is a grade 3 mock exam paper that you can complete once you've gone through all the sections. One thing to note is that the book does NOT tell you the answers to the exercises or the mock paper anywhere in this book. This is a book you should work through with a professional piano tutor so that you can get the most out of it, and get direct feedback on where your strengths and weaknesses may lie in theory. It's also very useful to be able to practice the scales on a piano as you learn the new scales included in this book, as they will help you to remember the relative keys, and sharps and minors in each of them in a practical context. This is a very good theory book, very helpful with lots of good exercises contained inside it. With the help of a tutor and lots of dedicated practice, this will teach you everything you need to know to achieve a grade 3 level.

Great but for the missing answers - you pay extra for those.
As applies to all the 5 theory books, they're brilliantly laid out with great examples and a useful mock exam at the end but you have to buy a separate book for each one to get the answers - money grabbing at its most blatant IMHO.

Essential if planning to go past ABRSM grade 5
Just finished piano grade 2, and starting grade 3 - the practical route rather than the video one. The problem with the video route is you miss out so much - no testing on scales, or arpeggios - or theory. Yet if you want to go past grade 5 with ABRSM you have to pass a theory test - and these workbooks - one per grade - help you work towards them. I don’t find them easy - too much like maths for me - but with the help of some excellent YouTube videos, and my piano teacher, I’m amazed to find I can work out things like the key signature of a piece of music. Never thought I could ever do that. These are really essential if you want a more rounded knowledge, plan to progress with ABRSM, and I highly recommend them.
