EVERYONE had a Story to Tell
This book shows you a glimpse into the lives of others who kept a journal, diary, notebook, etc to write their thoughts, notes, to capture events and what they witnessed. I love reading through this book discovering the lives of different people from different periods in time. It is important to document events you witnessed. You may talk about it when you say, "Do you remember when..." but how about writing it down for future generations to learn from you about your perspective on a historic moment.Remarkable Diaries is full of snippets from people from different eras, and walks of life who took the time to write things they experienced or witnessed in their lifetime. Now today we can learn from their journals about life during the time period they lived in. What an incredible treasure!Because of the this book I have been doing more research on the people mentioned who I knew nothing about. I am learning who they were, where they came from, something about their background, and what times were like in the areas they were in.Highly recommend this book.

Fantastic
Fantastic read. Absolutely engaging. Couldn't put it down. Beautifully arranged covering written and illustrated journals and diaries. Fascinating content on every page. Well worth the money. There are 256 pages of the best journals and diaries you'll ever see.

Excited to add this to my library - WOW
I own many books with pictures about sketchbooks but this is so different. It is memoirs, journals and historical context. The pages are oversized, filled with facts, pictures and most importantly, seeing thehandwritten words. Absolutely beautiful. I am an artist/writer - I don’t know if it’s the pandemic but I was really touched reading this book. This is from the Foreward, Professor Kate Williams’ words: “Through times of great change, upheaval, or suffering, people keep writing, to save themselves, to know they are still present, not alone.” A great book to buy yourself!

A lovely overview of the human history of the desire to document life as it is lived.
This is one of the most beautiful books I've ever bought. Everything about it is appealing, from the outsize format (the better to see the manuscripts), to the glossy, heavy quality of the paper (the better to show the colors), to the wonderful insights that put each journal in the context of history and the writers' lives (the better to understand the challenges and desires that caused the journals to come into existence). The earliest one, Egyptian, dates back four millennia, possibly more. This is a carefully curated collection, offering a wide variety of writers -- men, women, young, old, rich, poor, some well educated, some self taught, but every one of the examples shows the value of reflection and conscious understanding of the life each writer lived, as he or she lived it.A feast of words and ideas, in a gorgeous setting. This book will be a much-loved part of my permanent collection.

Great Visual however missing several important people
The book is beautifully made however after looking through it I realized there were quite a few very important figures missing namely Christopehr Columbus - the explorer who discovered the Americas. You would think that would have been an obvious historical diary since it changed the course of history. Why do you think it wasn't included? Probably because his actual diaries show that he was indeed an exceptional explorer with human strenghts and weaknesses. Other than that it is a very good source for the classroom or home.

Amazing book! A must have!!
Wow, this is a incredibly cool book. These people were there. Journals, diaries, manuscripts etc. from 4000BC to current times. Very interesting and highly recommended. A few examples: a journal entry for a foreman from ancient Egypt who was in charge of 200 workers transporting limestone blocks from the quarry via the Nile and canals to the Great Pyramids or a letter from a man who lived 61-113CE during the peak of the Roman Empire and witnessed and wrote about the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. If you enjoy ancient history at all you need this book.
