Fun and tactical game for all to enjoy
I chose the underworld variant solely based on the artwork and fantasy creatures rather than the normal version of Smallworld as I worried that it would be too similar to Risk or Catan. After playing the game I realised that although there are elements similar to risk, it is uniquely its own game and it plays differently enough to set it apart from that game. I did research beforehand that said that underworld and regular smallworld basically play the same with some people preferring the underworld version. The aesthetic is really great and my younger children enjoyed picking the different fantastical races. I thought it looked quite daunting to understand but the quick reference cards are fantastic and help the game along. Having a turn marker forces the game to end in a set number of turns and that is really good because it stops the game from dragging on but also doesn’t halt the game prematurely. I was pleasantly surprised to see multiple game boards for 2,3,4 and 5 players. I’ve not seen that before. After playing it a few times, I now have a sense of different tactics with different races but the random combination of power tokens and races really mixes it up each time. Lots of fun and I recommend.

An excellent expansion for the base Small World game
An excellent expansion for the base Small World game. Pros: - Increases the number of people that can play, (3-6 players), via the use of the extra sky islands board to extent the base board - Maintains competitive but balanced play on the board - Adds new races and powers for more variation - The new races and powers can still be used without the sky islands board (expect for one special power) Cons: - No extra tokens, so lost ones can't be replaced. I also recommend that with 3-4 players, the 2 sky island board side it used, 5-6 player games use the 3 island side.

Great fun, highly recommended
I have played this game with two players, 4 and 5. It is great fun, its replayability is one of its strong points. It plays well with 2,4 and 5 people (5 does take a long time, which is understandable). The rules are not too hard and it does not take for ever to finish. The design is absolutely beautiful and all the expansions that are available will give you an extra twist is you want it. I would recommend it to anyone who likes board games even if they are not hardcore players.

A great expansion for Smallworld Lovers.
If you are an avid player of smallworld then I would stick out my neck and say you're going to love this. The components, all card tiles and tokens, are of the usual Days of Wonder quality. The artwork is great and keeps the same cartoony fantasy theme as all the other Smallworld games/expansions. The idea with this expansion is to create a different map each time you play. You can either do this by creating one yourself, with just about as many combinations as you can think of, or you can play one of the scenarios listed in the vast, multilingual rulebook. The scenarios are good fun with increasing difficulty as you progress through them. Some of the themes are good fun, can't wait to compete for the rusted throne (I wont be pushing any small children from towers to win though!) It can be combined with all the other versions and expansions including Smallworld Underworld. There are actually a number of scenarios where you can combine the original with Underworld, which I don't have so can't comment on the compatibility there but it looks fun. We are looking forward to throwing the event cards expansion into the mix. I only have two complaints, and they're not major, just here for consideration. One is that set up is a bit clunky and doesn't feel completely natural to do. Possibly it will once we are a bit more used to it. It doesn't effect game play however and once set up it's great. The other is the number of two player scenarios. We primarily play with just two of us here, (We bought the original because it had a specific 2 player board) it would be nice to have some more. I do sometimes think that the big board game companies forget that a lot of gamers often play in twos and we're not all members of a well funded gaming group. Again it's only a small gripe and as there are guidelines for our own boards I'm sure we'll get over it! Overall, a great expansion for lovers of the original and/or Underworld adding more even more replay value, bearing in mind that the replay value is already pretty high. If you only ever play Smallword from time to time you can probably give it a miss but try it out if you can.

Great game, high quality of the components. Harder to play than the original version, but that's what make it better!

I haven't picked up the main "board" of Small World since receiving this expansion set of map tiles. That was always my one complaint about the main game is that the map was not as varied and random as the rest of the game experience. Realms answers with a clever solution that has some really fun and thoughtful mechanics. There are prebuilt 12 scenarios that each can be assembled with the map tiles, but the land is not the only thing that changes. New and exciting rules also exist that make specific locations earn more victory points, or even special powers, per turn. Another recent favorite is the "Adrift" scenario where essentially any tile on the outside edge of the map, can be willfully moved each turn by each player. Changing the landscape constantly! I have been enjoying the prebuilt scenarios so much, I have not yet created my own. It is only a matter of time!

I am constantly looking for strategy games that are fun to play for my wife and I. I also play with some friends too in groups. I got the chance to play the original Smallworld at a friends house and loved it. When I decided to buy it, I saw this version and decided to get something different than what my friend owned. Unfortunately, there isn’t much different between the original and this stand alone version. The Races, Powers, and Map are different but gameplay is the same. What I love about this game and the original Smallworld is that it adjusts the map size depending on how many people are playing. For those who have never played, this game is a more strategic version of Risk. You earn coins for how many territories you own at the end of your turn. Like Risk, you expand your troops into new territories. When combat happens it is solely based on how many troops you have versus luck based rolling. One key difference between the two games is that your race is limited in size and can only expand so far. Once you hit your limit, you go “into decline” and choose a new race. The game is limited to a set amount of turns. Whoever has the most coins win. This game is 30-45 minutes for two and longer for more but the game adjusts to group size. It is simple, fun, and addicting. I highly recommend this game. Underground is fun because of the darker spin on the characters but the original is also a blast.
