Works Great for Magic Water With Soda Ash
I purchased this Penguin Pottery sodium silicate to make magic water using soda ash, and it worked really well for that purpose. I did not use it for crackle effects like some people do, but as an alternative to traditional slip it performed exactly how I hoped. When mixed with soda ash, it creates a strong bond and works great for joining clay pieces during hand building. It applies easily and holds parts together well without needing additional support. Plus no slip mess in my studio! If you are a ceramic artist or potter looking to make magic water or want an alternative to slip for clay construction, this sodium silicate is a solid option and does the job reliably.

Use in moderation
It worked well but I accidentally used a little too much and my slip was too thin. However the product worked well; it was operator error

Great Price and Product
I bought this item because I was gifted a bunch of clay and I was interested in slipcasting. It worked great and even two years later.

Works like a charm!
I do not throw.. I hand build and was told this wouldn’t work for hand building… challenge accepted! It works best with very fresh and supply clay.. I make the basic shape I want.. paint it on, let it dry and then with a wooden tool start pushing out from the inside… just one pass at a time.. little by little. I was also told that you couldn’t touch it once it had been painted on.. I find this not to be true at all. Maybe if I mixed it with slip that would be the case, but painted on directly I can safely handle the pot as I manipulate it. It does, of course, dry the clay, which makes pushing a lot more tiring, but slowly and consistently makes for some very nice results.

My New Favorite Surface Decoration
Steps to Using! 1. Throw cylinder on the pottery wheel 2. Remove excess water and slip from the outside walls of the cylinder with a metal rib or sharp scraper 3. Apply with a brush (an even coat) 4. Dry with heat gun or hair dryer while the wheel is spinning 5. Push the walls outward from inside the cylinder to create the crackles! One of my favorite ways to complete my pottery!

Needs to be sealed better
Container busted in shipping. I feel like it should be sealed with more than tape on the outside. the container leaks if its tipped over while closed. Otherwise the product is good and works as intended.
