Great question! Our Pu'er Green contains 41-61mg of caffeine per sachet. What makes our green teas especially cool is that they also contain a high amount of l-theanine and catechins - catechins slow the release of the caffeine in the tea, giving you a 6-hour boost of energy, and l-theanine is an amino acid that promotes mental clarity and a feeling of calmness. So you get a long-lasting and calm energy boost!

Please note that our Pu'er Black Tea is considered ripe at time of harvest. When pu'er is fermented to its ripe version, it transforms. The catechins have been metabolized by bacteria and fungi, transforming them into different polyphenols, known as theaflavins which range from 81-121mg per sachet. It's higher in caffeine at 58-87mg, with a woody, mellow flavor – great for sensitive tummies.

why is this tea so expensive?

Our regular teas come out to $0.86 per cup, and for our bundles, less than $3 for 3 cups of tea per day. Some our specialty teas (like our Pu'er, Chaga, Reishi, and Sun Goddess Matcha) have twice the amount of tea in a carton than our regular teas (28 sachets per carton), but their higher prices are determined by their higher costs of production: these particular teas are some of our proudest accomplishment teas at Pique and are among the best teas on the market when it comes to quality, purity, and cleanliness. Our hand-selected sourcing, toxin screenings, and dedication to naturally grown products for these inherently rare ingredients all play a role in their price.

Pu'er Teas are sourced from rare 250-year-old Camellia Sinensis Assamica trees that undergo a natural fermentation process. A difference in price for pu'er teas vs other traditional teas is partly due to where the pu’er tea leaves come from. ‘Wild arbor’ teas (or older tea trees that grow wild in forests) command much higher price tags than ‘terrace grown’ (or commercially farmed) varieties. Wild trees are simply rarer, in higher demand, and far superior in quality. A second reason is, how long the tea ages and ferments can also drive up the price tag, similar to a fine wine, you’ll pay a higher price for pu’er tea that’s been left to ferment longer.
