Fun
This is just fun. I tried it and had an ember after a few tries. My only complaint is the board seems a little fragile. The bow is very well made.

Tried making my own, no luck, this worked 1st try!
Our Scout Troop was doing Wilderness Survival and I was in charge of teaching the 3 methods of starting a fire, after watching several youtube videos on starting a fire with a bow drill i headed to my scrap tree branch fire wood collection and find a perfect shaped and size bow, I proceed to string it with paracord and I make a pine fireboard and used a old thin wooden flag pole for the spindle, I notched the fireboard just like the videos showed, even made a special aluminum insert for the handle or bearing block. Excited to try it out I put it all together and start cranking back and forth with the bow, i get smoke pretty quickly and keep on going, smoke going all over, I'm confident that i have done it, the fireboard slot it all filled up with black stuff so I stop and carefully place the black stuff in my lint and i gently blow on it, Hmmmmmm, no smoke, no nothing! so I pinch the black pile between my fingers, its not even HOT! What!. Ok so i think my fireboard and spindle must be of the wrong wood, so I make new ones from some tree branches, not pine, sorry I don't know what type of wood, but it was pretty hard wood. I notch it and go at it again with the bow, again lots of smoke this time and pretty quickly the notch is filled and I place the black notch filling into the lint, blow lightly on it and NOTHING! AGAIN! It looked so easy on youtube. So now I am determined to make a fire with a Bow Drill. A quick online visit to Amazon and I find this Primitive Fire Scout Bow Drill Kit, people in the reviews say it works, thats good enough for me, I order it next day delivery, it shows up and I take it to scouts that night and use it for the first time in front of the scouts, SUCCESS!, it must be the wood, I did the exact same thing, ran the spindle in the fireboard with the bow until the notch filled up with the black embers, lots of smoke, and when the notch was filled I dumped the black ember into my lint, gently blew on it, and it spread the red glow into the lint until it was a large red glowing POOF fireball! Then I did it again and dumped the embers into shredded paper from our paper shredder and it worked there also! So needless to say, I am a total believer in this Bow Drill Kit, 100% success 100% satisfied, so whatever wood the spindle and fireboard are made of, that must be the secret, in the reviews some say they are Cottonwood, other said White Cedar, I just know it works.

Good for teaching scouts fire-making
I have not yet successfully started a fire with it yet, but that's probably because I quit too soon. It squeaks awfully when I'm using it, so the noise is too much to continue with (for my dog and my neighbors). I put vaseline under the handblock and that helped with the noise. The materials look well-made and strong. I had to re-tie the bow string because it was too tight for me to snap the spindle into place. I bought this to show Boy Scouts a method of starting fire by friction, which is very difficult.

Bought this for a scout camp out to teach the boys how to light a fire without matches. It was challenging for the younger boys (ages 10-14) to use but the older boys did great and the Senior Patrol leader was able to get the fire started with a little dryer lint. Shipping was quick.

works as advertised
Delivered very quick received today and looks just as pictured. I have never tried this technique before only seen on tv and magazines, honestly I was a little sceptical that I would start a fire by spontaneously combusting in the fire pit before I would do it with this kit but I watched the short video as per instructions and i got a coal in less than ten minutes and only about 3 minutes after I got the technique down. Great for demo for boy scouts

Works
Works but this is a one time use item. We took this camping and it was fun to start our own fire like on survivor but it took us so long we rubbed a large hole thru the bottom piece.

Fire withing minutes!
I am no bushcrafter yet within 20 min i had a ember ready to drop in my nest and go into the kindling. Just buy this for your next adventure, the materials weigh very little. If you're just getting into primitive skills practice in a controlled environment before trying it live.
