Easy-Install Two-Stage Stairwell Drain Cover Resists Yard Waste Clogs and Flooded Basements

Great quality product, very impressed with the success of how well it works for my yard storm drains. In fact works so well over two big rain storms that I have since ordered another one for another yard drain. This really stopped all the stuff from going down the drain that I’d have to dig out after the rain storm . It really saves me a lot of work in the future I am proactive and stomping all the stuff from going down the drain, it keeps the drain from clogging up during the storm so all the water gets through the pipe in the rain storm and I’m not outside, trying to clear the entrance of the drain, I simply check it out after the rain storm and pick up anything that it stopped so it’s clear for the next rain storm. I don’t have to worry now about clearing out the whole storm drain.

These aren't going to make your drains magically outpace flooding or address uneven surfaces at your drain, but they are going to maximize surface area atop your drain cover and keep lots of the muck from your pipes.We got these for balcony drains on a vacation home that has Douglas fir and pine trees around it. New to us, we could see the house had issues with drains being clogged in the past. We are nearly to winter and months into the rain and pine-needle drop season, and these seem to be doing a great job. We have someone checking them every couple of weeks, and he is impressed with the job they are doing.The plastic has a good weight to it, which gives me the impression that it will hold up for many years. We installed them just before leaving, so I can't speak to how they are to walk around. Our existing drain cover did not have a central hole, but we did use the pin to be sure the defender did not move about.

The media could not be loaded. This works pretty decently but I wish they made a bigger version. We live in a woodsy area, and when it rains really hard even this defender gets overwhelmed with debris. And then water gets into my garage. I guess it would be less of an issue if I had more vertical clearance between the drain and my garage, but it starts flooding into my garage before the water level rises enough to make use of the holes on top of the drain defender. After some searching, I found that Quick Dam bags are useful for this issue. They swell up with water when they become wet and shrink back down when they dry -- so you can just leave them in place all the time (with maybe a rock on them so they don't blow away) and they're relatively unobtrusive.

UPDATE (8/11/2021): It's been over a year and my Drain Defender is still going strong. Two quick cleanings of mud buildup is the only maintenance I've done to it (one today which made me think to write a review update). I no longer worry about the drain backing up and flooding my basement during a rainstorm, which has been a huge relief.Soon after moving into our house a couple years ago, we realized that the drain at the bottom of our exterior basement stairs was going to be a problem. We'd only been in the house for a few months when the basement flooded because the drain cover became clogged by floating debris during a rainstorm. Every time that it would rain after that, I would worry about the basement flooding again and constantly check the drain. I've had more than one night ruined by a thunderstorm, when I would run to the basement and frantically clear leaves and other clutter off the drain before the water level rose too high. When going out of town, seeing any rain in the forecast at home would make me nervous that I'd be coming home to a ruined basement.I looked all over for a solution, but was surprised to find that there didn't seem to be anything out there for this problem. The Drain Defender has changed all of that! It prevents my drain from becoming clogged and I no longer have to worry. No more late night ventures into the rain to clear it out. Installation couldn't have been easier...it just fits right on top of your existing drain cover. I would highly recommend this product to anyone experiencing flooding problems due to drain blockage.

I don't know about you, but there are certain things my husband and I struggle with in our home that we thought there was no hope for...one of the worst things was living in fear of every rainstorm because the drains in our driveway or the side of the house would clog with debris (no matter how often we swept) and the water would back up and flood the basement. It was to the point that if we heard rain in the middle of the night we had to get up and check the drains...and often saw a small lake forming and had to go running out in rainboots at 4am to clear them. After a particularly terrible storm I did a search thinking we can't be the only ones with this issue, and turns out I was right! After reading the reviews I ordered one for same-day delivery - it arrived just in time to test out with more massive rain that day and it was a MIRACLE to see it at work. Debris gathered around the sides and the water was still able to get to the drain, just as it was supposed to. We almost wept with relief and joy - we had no idea there was such a simple, ingenious device waiting to eliminate so much stress in our life!! I instantly ordered another one for the side of the house, and am writing this review with sincere gratitude to the makers of this product! :)

Basement kept flooding because of a clogged drain at the bottom of our exterior stairs (leaves would pile on top of the drain and prevent water from draining to pipe). We got this product and haven’t had any issues! It’s a lot wider than our 3” drain which is great as it keep the leaves further away from the drain. I recommend.

It fit perfectly and gave our narrow drain more space to collect debris and still allow water to drain

I had made a really ugly thing to do this same job. Mine also did not always work. Found this by accident and bought it. This product looks and works great. I just didn't know they made stuff like this!
