Safer Than Other Butane Canisters - But Using These Still Produces Carbon Monoxide (Prop 65 Warning)
I just purchased an Iwatani ZA-3HP portable butane stove, and the directions say that the stove should only be used with Iwatani butane canisters, so I bought these too. I know most companies will push their own accessories, but apparently this has some merit. Unlike the cheap canisters you can get in Asian food markets, Iwatani canisters are produced under the very stringent quality controls and are equipped with a patented Countersink Release Vent (CRV) system for extra safety. If the pressure in the canister gets too high, the CRV activates and releases the pressure. Since safety is a big concern with me, this purchase was a no-brainer.What I did not know was that there is a Prop 65 - Reproductive Harm warning on these canisters. When I saw that I was initially a bit freaked out because I didn't know what it was for. Were there harmful chemicals in the canisters? Would I be inhaling poison? There was no customer service number for Iwatani and an internet search yielded little until I found the answer on a camping forum. Turns out that burning fuel of any kind will produce some carbon monoxide, which is a dangerous chemical and THAT is what triggers the Prop 65 warning. Therefore, when you use a butane stove, you need to have adequate ventilation and space, i.e. do not use a portable stove in a small enclosed area like a tent or van.I did manage to contact Iwatani by email and they confirmed all this. What I also did not know is that storing these canisters has some risks too. You can't let them get moist or wet (rust and corrosion danger), they need to be in a ventilated area (so my idea to store them in my broken oven was nixed), and the temperature has to be between 32 degrees and 125 degrees Fahrenheit (not too hard for most of us).Anyway, I have learned a lot about butane and camping stoves in the past week. But I docked these 1 star for the fact that information about the Prop 65 warning was nowhere on the Iwatani site, it was hard to find on the internet, and Iwatani customer service had no phone number, only an email.Otherwise, one of these cans came slightly dented but it seems to work fine. I was also told to remove them from the portable stove when not in use, and to replace the cap. So far, so good. Also, some people choose to use cheaper fuel cans like the GasOne canisters (which are not always cheaper, check current prices).I'd say it's probably o.k. to use those in a pinch, like when you run out of fuel and that's the best option at the time. However, with the added CRV feature in the Iwatani cannisters, I would say that ultimately they are worth the extra money for the added safety and piece of mind.
