Wow, it's dark in here!
For a few years I've been using the little satin masks that you get for free on the airplane sometimes. They don't really block out the light from all sides, they crush your eyelashes, and they slip off. I decided it was time for an upgrade and I'm very pleased with my Bedtime Bliss mask! My first impression upon trying it on (in a sunny room) was, "Wow, it's really dark in here!" Then I realized--I actually had my eyes open. Because of the molded shape, you can open your eyes, blink, and look around inside the mask. The nose part is far superior to any other sleep mask design out there, and with a little fidgeting you can get it into a position where it almost perfectly matches the shape of your nose. If you've got all the lights on and your eyes open, yes, you'll be able to see some light around your nose, because everyone's nose is a different shape and size, and this mask is only one size. But if you close your eyes, don't it almost feel like nothing's changed at all? Wait... that's a song... anyway, if you close your eyes, it'll be dark. YAY.Why not five stars? I would love a mask that had a removable cover so I could wash it more easily and frequently, and reduce the risk of irritation or acne that could develop from wearing it snug against my skin for 25-33% of my life. I'm not sure how that would be possible with the molded shape, but that would be on my list for a perfect sleep mask. My second, and more reasonable, request would be a different band. The velcro on this band get can caught in my hair, especially after moving around against the pillow at night. Most importantly, a split or double band (that is, one part to go over the crown of the head and another to go more around the nape of the neck) would significantly increase the staying power of this mask as I seem to move around quite a bit and usually the mask is off when I wake up. I might get some elastic at the fabric store and replace the band with a double, velcro-free band on my own. Just call me the MacGyver of hot pink arts and crafts projects.

A Tale of 3 Eyemasks and a Severe Dust Mite allergy
I have severe dust mite allergies and live with an insomniac. I am also a side sleeper. I need an eye mask that meets three criteria: 1) blocks light (obviously); 2) does not press on my nose or the sinuses over or under my eyes; and 3) is machine washable in hot water and can be dried on high heat (to kill the dust mites). I have tried many eye masks, but always come back to the cheap eye masks like the $1.99 ones from Dream Essentials. My latest foray into the eye mask world were the Alaska Bear, the sleep mask from Bedtime Bliss, and the Nidra Deep Sleep mask. Although none of them fit all of my requirements, I thought a review might help others.First, the Nidra mask. I am sorry to say that this mask met none of my requirements. I have a small face, and this mask was too large and too rigid to mold to my face. Because of its size and rigidity, it also moved significantly when I tried to sleep on my side. I never made it more than a half an hour in this mask without giving up and taking it off. In order to adjust it so it blocked the light while I was on my back, it pressed on the bridge of my nose and was uncomfortable. Given its construction, it is not machine washable.Second, the Alaska Bear. It definitely blocks the light and has held up well through numerous machine washings on hot and a hot dryer. It has an adjustable strap that is not velcro, and I was able to adjust it to fit my face while it also did not seem to be pressing on my sinuses. I say that it seemed not to press, because although it was comfortable when I went to sleep, every time I have worn it, I have woken up in the middle of the night with a raging sinus headache. After giving it a lot of thought, I have come to the conclusion that the design of this mask, in which the bottom of the eye covers extend to halfway down my cheeks, creates too much weight on the sides of my nose and my lower sinuses. As much as I want to love this mask, I can't wear it.Third, the Bedtime Bliss. It is a happy medium between the two other masks. It is somewhat rigid, like the Nidra, and has pockets that cover the eyes, unlike the Alaska Bear that rests on the eyes. It is small enough to fit my face, and stays in place even when I sleep on my side. I have to wear it higher on lay face that is probably optimal, because otherwise it rests on my lower sinuses, but it still blocks the light adequately. It is, however, not meant to be machine washable, at any temperature. I have to wash my masks weekly because of the severe dust mite problem, and I try to rotate two eye masks in a week. Putting this mask in the washer and dryer caused the fabric cover to separate from the foam inner structure. I liked this mask, but it is not for someone who has to kill dust mites because handwashing is insufficient.

More expensive than other masks, but worth the price
I purchased this mask because my schedule means that I am sometimes asleep during the daytime hours. My room receives an extreme amount of sun during the day (the most of any room in the house), so I wake up frequently when I am not wearing a sleep mask. This mask has been the perfect solution; it keeps the light out and creates total darkness. I've notice a significant reduction in the number of times I wake up during the night (or the day, in this instance) and would definitely oversleep if it weren't for my alarm. When I wake up and remove my mask, it's always a little jarring to transition from the complete darkness created by the mask to a room that is flooded with light. (That's not a bad thing; it says a lot about the amount of coverage that the amount offers.)It also helps that the mask is extremely comfortable. You're not overly conscious that you have the mask on because it isn't bulky and the material that it's made of is pretty smooth and soft. The tightness of the mask can be adjusted using using velcro strips that are attached to the straps. I particularly love that the mask was created in such a way that I can open my eyes beneath the mask with ease (not that I need to open my eyes, but I've never liked the feeling of pressure on my eyes while I'm trying to sleep, which is something I've experienced with other masks). Another big plus is that this mask never leaves indentations on my face. While I was not pleased with having to spend over $10 for a sleep mask, it's clearly been worth it in the end.I cannot comment on the ear plugs, since I don't use them.
