A Three Star Unit, At Best **UPDATE**
(***UPDATED 2x*** increased by two stars...got this bad boy working much better, and added second update!)I have spent a week with this stereo installed into my '03 Saturn Ion, mainly because another review on the net spoke of the exact same car and radio, stating that it sounded no different from stock. How wrong.I admit, I am "spoiled" by awesome sound at home, a high efficiency Tripath-based amp, Music Hall turntable, Fostex-based speakers, etc. I have also owned headphones ranging from basic Grados up to the Stax Omega II electrostatics. Why did I buy this "basic" car stereo? I am asking myself the same question! It was cheap. I got it for half of retail on the net. I just wanted something that would relieve the ANNOYING nature of my Griffin iTrip FM transmitter (the constant subtle whine, the sudden GSSHHHRRSSSSHHTTT!!! when the unit decided to shut itself off after I'd paused it for all of ten seconds, etc.)Coming from the headphone jack of an iPod 6G, when you put this thing in "neutral" (aka no input gain, bass, treble, etc. at zero, no "loud", no nothing), it is positively THIN sounding. Even painful depending on the source material.I am getting a line-out dock any day now (waiting...waiting...) and will amend this then.I didn't expect much from a cheap car stereo in a fairly average car with stock speakers. But I'm just saying, this is NOT a 4.5 star unit. 3 at best.CD performance is better, and I will amend this with info on the line-out dock as soon as I have received and tested it for a while.Thank you.**UPDATE**YAY! THINNESS SOLVED! EASILY!First of all, this unit sounds like crap the first few hours out of it's box. Just let it settle in, like any audio gear. However the important thing:I have been running this out of my headphone jack. Not the best, you want a line out dock (iPod dock connector, like at the bottom, going to a minijack connector for the stereo). I have been waiting PATIENTLY for mine, and am waiting for it...that will be update #2 to this review. However, for now, with the headphone out:If you want to match the warm, generally euphonic sound of the stock Saturn unit (and even surpass it with more detailed but non-harsh highs), do this:Set your EQ to OFF. Yeah, all EQ modes are awful on this head unit. Just stay away.Set your iPod to like 55 - 65% volume.Press the volume button (on the Sony) in, until you get to AUX. With your iPod at 65% volume or so, set that AUX setting to "+18" - that is the auxiliary gain. Now, get out of that mode (back to clock), hold the center button down to get to your master settings menu, and *set the LOUD setting to ON.*OH YEAH!The harsh harsh highs just fade away into the nice warm pleasingly-tubby midbass and the once HORRIFICALLY lacking midrange blooms. Electronic music is fun (and no longer a chore) to listen to. Classical is as lovely as budget-fi car stereo gets. Acoustic instruments at least have their midrange present in spades. All kinds of music benefits.(The LOUD setting is touted in the manual as "boosting the highs and lows"...which I would normally be 100% opposed to...funny, though, those highs and lows must be horribly turned down with the stock settings, because the stereo suddenly sounds present, more netural, more alive when on "LOUD." Go figure.)The midrange is warm, present and reasonably detailed. Midbass is pleasantly punchy. The sound reaches out and grabs you with nearly none of the previous non-euphonic peakiness.NOTE: if you hear a "crunchy" or ugly degraded "grrrr" sound with huge bass hits, loud vocals or whatever, turn the iPod's volume down a little, maybe to 80%. If you still hear it, turn the iPod volume down a little, until it goes away.NOTE #2: sometimes you will start your car, all conditions above will be satisfied and the music will still be a tad thin. Just give it two or three minutes to run, double-check your levels on both your pod and the Sony unit (remember, 65% pod, +18 AUX on sony with LOUD setting ON). The sound warms up and gets richer. Don't ask me why, but you will hear the same thing.Further, I do notice that the highs on this unit, and a little bit of inner "macro" detail (not so much micro detail, but inner macro detail) does get represented here, and the highs are more extended but also dippier, so you do lose some lower treble in strange but "acceptably" euphonic ways. This is not detailed sound, this is not perfect car audio sound (honestly, tweeters would make this stero pretty boss), but boy is it pleasing. For some reason Internet explorer is not letting me increase the stars to four, because this unit does deserve four stars...heck maybe even five considering I got it for half of retail.Alright, so I will chime in next as soon as I get that LOD (line out dock) cable! Thanks for reading, I am excited about this thing.p.s. a tip: if you have a 6gen iPod Classic 120gb (cannot speak for any other model) and you are getting weird twirpy fuzz (like one of those awful iTrip-type FM transmitters, except more digital-sounding), you PROBABLY have the volume limiter engaged. For some reason, the volume limiter introduces some sort of odd digital noise into the signal for some inexplicable reason. To fix it, go to your main menu and turn that volume limiter all the way up (unless you are in the EU, then you cannot). This will allow you to "truly" follow the advice above, set the headphone out volume to 85 - 90%, AUX gain to +18 and have some fun with no ugly audible distractions!IF THAT DOESN'T WORK: This happened to me a second time (the FM transmitter-like squeal and whine and crackle when using the iPod line out), and wasn't fixed by the above like the first time...rapidly rotating the volume control with the head unit OFF solved it.** UPDATE #2! MUCH BETTER STILL! ****Alright, it's Ultimate Performance time, with stock Saturn speakers, iPod 6g/120gb and now - a line-out dock. The best way to get a line out dock is to pick up one of the white ones from Amazon. They are 4-foot long, have an iPod dock connector at one end and a stereo miniplug at the other. This allows you to bypass the headphone amp and will give you:- Punchier sound (aka "better transients" - sounds start and stop faster, more realistically, more in a more "present" fashion...subtle, but adds excitement and realism, trust me!)- More detailed sound (so while you might hear the bass guitar well through the headphone output, and it explodes with a "BRRRRRRRRR", you will hear subtle detail in the bass guitar now "BRRRwRRRRwRRRRwRRRR" - hard to describe but audiophiles call it "inner detail." It's like more texture and nuance, more of the "micro sounds" that inform our perceptions of "is it real or not?"- Ergonomics: your cord will now come from the bottom of the pod down instead of awkwardly "antenna-ing" out the top and draping down, which is less comfortable to use while driving.So...this stereo, Saturn stock speakers, a line out cable for your iPod and JUST the right settings on the Sony = BUDGET BLISS!!!

Great Value
There is nothing flashy about the Sony CDX GT-110. It has all the basics expected in a radio/CD player plus some very nice extras. I have installed this unit in a sailboat and use the auxiliary input to connect to a satellite radio, MP3 player and a DVD player. The built in equalizer is handy. It is truly a great value.
