Nicholas of Myra: Giver of Many Gifts (Saints and Me!)

Smallish, but nice.
I didn't read the dimensions of this book, so I was a bit surprised by the smaller size. However, my four year old really likes it, and has requested more books about the saints.

Wonderful introduction to St. Nicholas for the younger set (ages 4-6)
This series is a great read-aloud for younger kids (ages 4-6, I'd say), although I've caught our eldest, who is 8, reading them, as well.I really love the illustrations, too... simple and very sweet. The stories themselves pass along a good amount of facts about each saint without overloading young ones with too much information.I purchased this one about St. Nicholas in anticipation of his feast day in December. Our 6 and 4 year old loved it - the story is told well and kept their attention.I highly recommend this series - it's the best saint series for younger kiddos that I have seen so far. We have a few of them and have been pleased with them all.

St. Nick into Santa could be better
Decent story about this saint and his life. I was looking for something to share with my boys as we discuss Santa and how he came to be. It was hard to choose a book that had an easy to understand story along with enough facts to teach them something they had not already heard. This story is simple but good. My 5 and 8 year-old both enjoyed it and discussed it with me afterwards. I will say I wish it had a better flow into how he "became Santa." It mentions when St, Nick died there became legends, etc. But, I had to talk to my 8 year-old about how it turned into the magic of Santa (because his question was-"So he came back to life? How does he leave us presents?"). Unfortunately, I wanted a book that smoothed those edges, not one that made me show my creativity once again. I do not want the boys to lose the magic of Santa, but I do want them to learn the reality of Saint Nicholas. I would be interested in another book that does that better.

Theology problem for my family
Review by a mom & grandma.... The artwork looked very nice in the listing and in person. The listing does not get into the theology background or give the church denomination/affiliation of the writer & I wish that it had been stated. The book gives some of the known history of St. Nicholas of Myra. But it also goes into stories of people who later began praying to St. Nicholas and appears to be one of a series of books on the Saints of the Church and the practices concerning them. I am not sure what Church is being referenced, but this book makes it clear throughout the book that praying to saints is a good thing. I don't agree with this theology at all and so unfortunately will not be using this book. I was hoping that this book was simply about the history of the original Nicholas of Myra. I hope this helps.
