Can this be used in a toliet?

NO !! Use a Closet Auger on toilets. Cobra makes one its $6 on AMZ. I cant recommend that one, never tried it. I am a plumber and recommend the Rigid brand. You can, however you will immediately go in to the trap after a sharp 90 going down, if the disposer is trapped separately from the rest of the sink (i.e. another basin.) The other usual configuration is a horizontal line from the disposer entering into a vertical line dropping down from the basket assay below the other basin. If you have this configuration, there is a baffle/deflector at a 45 degree to force the water down the vertical pipe, so the force of the disposer dumping the water does not come up into the 2nd basin. Your auger will definitely get stuck here. Better to plunger each side while blocking off basket assay of other side. This usually works... 35 yrs+ plumber

Started to use it and the whole coil released, how do you put it back in to use?

i had the same thing happen , we simply re loaded the coill back inside. its not held on by anything that i saw

Does one need to remove the P-trap to use this device? Or can you put it down the sink drain from the top of the sink?

I have a PVC P-trap and could not get the auger head to get past the inside pipe's lip at the end of the P-trap. I know some augers have a hinged head, but this one does not, so as soon as it got past the first bend it would be pressing hard against the pipe wall. Since there was a second join just ahead, with a lip where the next length of PVC followed the coupling, at that point it got stuck and nothing got it past -- not going in slow or fast, or rotating slow or fast, or clockwise or counterclockwise, not even coating it with WD-40. So it will depend on the type of coupling in your P-trap, some it will go through easily I'm sure, but some it will not.
