Aphids, oh and horrid soil smell.. but herbs like it
The soil grows herbs so well, the cilantro grew in just 6 days from planting the seeds. And my basil was very happy.BUT! Caution:1. The soil smells SO BAD!!! It smells fine in the bag before you get water in it. But after the plans have been in it for a couple of days it starts smelling musty and may be rotten but it isn’t rotten (plant roots are healthy and happy). Since these are indoor plants having that smell in my house is just not an option. I have to know find some thing to cover the topsoil so that it hides some of the smell.2. Also the soil stays very wet for a long time. And seems wet even when it’s time to water. Maybe not a big deal, but you have to keep an eye on it more than usual.3. The same week I first used it, I got APHIDS on 2/3 plants which I used the soil on. A huge swarm of them developed within just a few days. The only one that didn’t get them was one basil plants I had just bought at the store and didn’t repot yet. Had to kill one of my basil plants while battling these creatures.Maybe they didn’t come from the soil.. but given that they are inside and the only thing they did was put them into this natural soil.. I can only speculate it’s the source.Aphids aside, the smell needs something done about it. The only thing I can think of is buying shredded mulch which is closer to the soil that the store basil came in and mixing it in with this soil. I’m new to growing plants so I just don’t know what you can do here.. but aphids and stench is just a bit too much for indoors.

Good Soil for Herbs
I have recently just started growing herbs indoor and had a bad experience with so-called organic soil which I purchased locally. The seeds for the herbs never germinated and in addition, the soil became contaminated and developed an odor. I saw reviews for this soil which were good so I purchased and received the bag the next day. The soil smelled fresh and rich was not too thick, just loose enough to put in my containers and then sprinkle over the seeds easily. I planted both herbs pictured here, cilantro I had to transfer from old soil and Lemon balm (small container). Within 4 days, the lemon balm started to sprout and the cilantro stem stood up and its leaves started growing. Its been almost 2 weeks now and both herbs are thriving.

Little Flies Began Appearing in my Apartment
So, the soil is good in the sense the cat grass seeds I planted grew beautifully and my lemon basil is also growing nicely. However, I’m pretty sure the soil is developing fungus gnats and I’m not sure yet what I’m going to do. I find it gross, but I don’t want to throw my plants away. I’m torn, I wouldn’t buy this soil though it seems to produce annoying little gnats. Also it was expensive for the amount of soil given.

Contains bugs
I got this to plant some herbs and when I soaked the soil a ton of small white bugs started climbing out of the soil. I'm assuming they're aphids but it's hard to tell since they're juvenile. Definitely not something I want near herbs though.

Great soil mix.
My herbs have been planted in this soil for a few months in indoor self watering planters and they are thriving.
