Astro Pneumatic Tool 1828 Onyx 3/8" Nano Impact Wrench v2-500ft/lb

The Astro Pneumatic Tool 1828 Onyx 3/8" Nano Impact Wrench absolutely exceeded my expectations. For such a compact tool, it delivers impressive power. It fits easily into tight engine bays and small spaces where a larger impact just won’t fit, which makes it perfect for automotive work and quick repairs. The build quality feels solid and durable, and it has a comfortable grip that makes it easy to control. Despite its small size, it has more than enough torque for removing bolts and fasteners without struggling. It also runs smoothly without excessive vibration. If you’re looking for a lightweight, compact impact wrench that still packs a punch, this one is a great addition to any tool collection. Definitely a solid buy for both DIYers and professionals. Definitely the best value for your money!

Very good. Powerful, small, seems well made. I don’t know about 450 ft-lb, but rating an impact tool that way isn’t so great. It is, unfortunately, all we have to compare with, though. Elsewhere in these reviews is a complaint about its performance on loosening head bolts. I believe the review, but take a look at torque limiting extensions.. they are long, and torsionally springy, just like head bolts. When you apply an impact to something that deflects, the impact is lessened. Remember elon musk throwing the ball bearing at the cybertruck window? Oops, neither the window nor the bearing deflected much. The force exceeded what the window could withstand. If he had thrown it at the softer tire, the deceleration and force would be less, nothing would have broken. Same as throwing it at a pillow, but that doesn’t mean the pillow is stronger than the window, or that it wasn’t thrown hard. Same with the head bolt, the longish bolt would twist, only right at the moment the rotating hammer applies the torque, where a short rigid lug nut would come off. Try using any impact wrench with a long extension, it just doesn’t work as well. I notice sometimes that even a deep socket lessens applied torque vs a shallow one. Anyway, I really like this little gun, and was surprised by its power, whatever number is assigned to it. The reversing/power lever and trigger have a nice feel, also. I do think that when the applied torque varies a lot depending on the rigidity of the fastener, socket, and extension (if any), rating the power in ft-lbs is a poor way to do it. Thats what everyone does, though, so hopefully it gives some info for comparison. Maybe energy per blow when stalled?...I Don’t know.... probably true that this won’t loosen something torqued to 450 ft-lb. I’m tempted to call it a lie, but astro is just conforming to a not so appropriate unit. It is quite powerful for a little 3/8 drive gun. (Ft-lb torque and ft-lb energy are not the same, despite the unfortunate apparent sharing of units...one involves motion, the other is using the ‘ft’ only to describe lever dimensions.)

Writing this review after changing 3 wheel bearings, 2 ball joints, and 2 struts in a single day. I think the other reviews that mention lack of power are probably not supplying this tool with enough air, or using an improper setting. Based on tool usage, I had to set my regulator at 110 PSI to keep 90 PSI at the tool during use. This measurement was using 50 feet of 3/8" air line with 1/4" Hi-Flow fittings. I believe this tool is sensitive to a lack of air. This tool was able to remove axle nuts that were torqued to 150 ft/lb, rusted ball joint nuts, and wheel bearing bolts easily. Lug nuts were no problem for this. This hits much faster than my 1894 Thor impact. The Thor might hit harder, but this hits more often. This was able to remove bolts that Thor wouldn't, but Thor was able to remove bolts this would not. The selector level on the back of the tool really can decrease the power a lot, useful for not breaking bolts. During the repairs yesterday I handed my neighbor this tool while doing the repairs, he actually snapped a wheel lug stud while tightening with this tool on max power forward setting, resulting in one more part replaced on the job. So really no concerns over lack of power. This fit into places that my other impact wrenches simply will not (IR 2135, HF Earthquake, Thor, and an old Coleman Gun) and seems to have plenty of power for most jobs. Just keep in mind this hits and spins much faster than most full size. I cannot comment on reliability as I have only used this gun for about 8 hours, but I did put it through hell over those 8 hours.
