Field Notes on Love

Cute story
Field Notes on Love was a cute story about Hugo, a sextuplet (part of a 6-pack), and Mae (also known as Margaret Campbell). Hugo lives in England, and had planned to go on a trip around the US with his girlfriend, also named Margaret Campbell, who in a strange turn of events dumps him but tells him - hey, you should still go on this trip! There's a catch. The trip was booked entirely by her, so he couldn't get into any of the hotels or anything without Margaret Campbell being with him with proper identification. So he puts out an ad for a Margaret Campbell. Mae responds to this ad.Mae is an aspiring filmmaker, who was just accepted to USC but not to their film program. She decides she needs adventure to find herself and experience new things, so she goes for it.Two strangers meet on a train, and of course, super cliché, end up falling in love. It was a little off-putting how quickly they started making out, I will say that.Otherwise though, after that one weird point, I kind of just decided to suspend reality and go with it. Hugo is a really really, genuinely, sweet and stand up guy. Mae comes with a bit of 'drama', but not so much that it put me off.A cute story, cute romance, super predictable, not amazing, but also not horrible.

heartwarming and charming
As 1/6 of the Surrey Sextuplets, Hugo sets out for one week of freedom before joining his five siblings at a university back in their hometown. The only issue - all of the tickets are listed under his ex's name and are non-transferable, no exceptions. After seeing an ad looking for a Margaret Campbell to join a cross country train trip, aspiring filmmaker Mae decides this may be just what she needs for her USC audition film.Anyone else interested in going on a cross-country road trip with a complete stranger after reading this?.. No? Just me?.. This book was all too heartwarming and charming and made us want to put out an ad to find our own Hugo and Mae love story. This book was a great reminder that you are your best self when you're following your dreams. And sometimes you meet the person who truly understands you in the most unlikely of places.

Deeply satisfying
Jennifer Smith has never let me down, hence my pre-ordering this book. I read it in one sitting and loved the story and the characters. Imagine you're one of a set of British sextuplets, your girlfriend of three years has just dumped you, but left you with the trip package the two of you were planning from London to the U.S. and from NYC across country by train to Emeryville, CA. She still wants you to go, but there's one small problem. The tickets and hotel reservations are in her name. This is Biracial Hugo's situation. Meanwhile, in a town just outside NYC in a house adjacent to the tracks leading out of NYC and eventually to the west, lives Margaret Campbell, AKA Mae, accepted at USC, but rejected by their film school which has been her dream for years. When Hugo's sister convinces him to put a message inline asking for another Margaret Campbell (his erstwhile girlfriend's name) who might be willing to accompany him on the trip, he gets two responses. Why his first choice doesn't work is good for a belly laugh, but then he contacts Mae, and the gods and goddesses of love and fate set to work. How everything plays out involves romance, wonder, some feelings of being trapped and both Hugo and Mae having to look at life through fresh eyes. It's a dandy and heartwarming story, and a great choice for school and public libraries.

Absolutely Delightful
I don’t have much else to say besides absolutely delightful. The concept was unique, the characters were lovely, and I found myself really falling in love with both Mae and Hugo. They were both so wonderfully REAL that I was so upset when our journey ended. I definitely cried a few times, too, but what else is new? This book made me so happy and I’m so glad I experienced it. What a charming read.

Sweet, inspiring story!
While this is a romance book and a lot of people think they don’t hold up to other types of books, I think this is a book everyone should read. As someone who identifies with both Mae and Hugo, it was immensely important to see how these two dealt with the problems they faced in their life and future. It was an incredibly inspiring book and one I’ll definitely be rereading soon. An amazing story!

Joyful Read!
This book brought me back to the era in my life where I would stay up until 4 AM to finish a book - something I did in this instance! I loved the story and I felt myself going through each emotion, holding my breath in all the right places, heart racing at all the granted moments, and feeling bursts of joy where the author granted it. I love this book so so so much and would recommend it to anyone!

A Cotton Candy read.
Sweet and I enjoyed it very much. The family dynamics were such a strong point and really elevated the story. The romance was cozy and expected but done well.

Field Notes On Why You Should Read This
I read this pretty much in one sitting. It was a very cute, heartwarming read. I loved both MC's — they stood well singularly, but also worked well together. Which is vital, seeming as this book is spread over a small amount of time. I believed their feelings. I was invested. Aside from the romance, the characters each went on a journey of self discovery / coming-of-age moment, and it was grand. Would definitely recommend this to anyone whose looking for a cute romance story.

A whole train journey of emotions
I read this book in one day. I just couldn't put it down and by the end of it I was crying. This book was just so touching, I laughed at Alfies and Maes dad's jokes and I cried for Mae and Hugo. It made me think alot about what the peole in Maes interveiws said, like Ida.The author has written this book so beautifully with such moving messages and heart-felt relatable characters that I couldn't not give this book 5 stars. My new favourite book.P.s. I love Maes grandma, what a star.

Poor condition
The book arrived within a week but sadly the book was not as described. I was led to believe it was in excellent condition. However on arrival the front cover was bent and all of the pages at the bottom had been water damaged. Yes they were intact but this not what I would describe as “excellent”
