This is definitely written with the African American counselee/counselor in mind, but it can be helpful to white pastors who may have to counsel African Americans in order to gain some understanding of possible issues facing them. The author is very straight forward about his experience with white oppression in his lifetime (born in the 1940's) and it could cause some to be offended. It was published before (2006) the election of Barak Obama and I wonder if any of the author's viewpoints would have changed.

Provides a new perspective.
I read this book as a text. It provides a perspective on pastoral care often absent from traditional texts. It is a very interesting read.
