Beaumont protects his partner from Internal Affairs...
I just started reading these books by Jance on Detective Beaumont in Seattle. I like her books about Sheriff Joanna Brady, but I'm really enjoying these books about Beaumont. in this book, Beaumont is reminded of his early days as a detective when the daughter of his former partner finds him to give him a journal that his former partner wrote. Beaumont's partner, named Pickles, was significantly older than he, and Pickles suffered a heart attack when confronted by a crime. In the midst of that crime, his gun was used to kill another person...and he is investigated for it. Beaumont comes to his partner's defense, and he finds out what really happens.I like these flashbacks into Beaumont's previous experiences because they give a lot of input into what makes him the man and detective he is currently. Jance also provides information about Beaumont's personal life, including his first marriage from which he had two children. His first wife did not appreciate all the time he spent being a cop, and detecting. These are enjoyable light reads...this was a shorter novella, so took hardly any time to get through it.

A great story!!!!
A very good storyline. On a rainy New Years Eve afternoon, while Mel is getting her nails done, Beau has a visitor. His first partner's daughter. She brings him a chapter of a book that Pickles was trying to write. Reading it takes him back to his first year in the Homicide Squad. And he remembers when Pickles was accuse lo Beau in this excellent book. Highly recommended.

Early days for J. P. Beaumont
This is an easy reading novella that gives an interesting look back at Beau's early days as a Detective in the Seattle PD. It is a very good introduction to Second Watch: A J. P. Beaumont Novel  (#20 in the series) released recently where an ageing Beau recovering from knee replacement surgery reflects on an early case that he has never solved."Pickles" Gurkey was unhappy when his partner was promoted and he had to train a new one, Jonas P Beaumont (or JP or Beau to his friends). They weren't very close until Pickles had a heart attack while confronting an offender who had left a restaurant without paying. Pickles collapses and the offender shoots the waitress who has also followed him using Pickle's gun. Internal affairs is convinced that Pickles shot the waitress and charged him with manslaughter when he recovered. This novella tells how Beau takes up the case unofficially on his own to clear his partner. This is a well crafted short story that fills in some early background on how Beau becomes such a great detective.

See you later, Ms. Jance
This was my first experience with J. A. Jance. I had to read some of the previous reviews to learn that the author is a woman. However, I might have guessed that from the way she portrayed the very sympathetic main character, Detective J. P. Beaumont. Even though this was only a novella, enough of his character was shown for me to judge him to be thoughtful, intelligent, kind, and with enough strength of character to conquer alcoholism.I liked Detective Beaumont and Ms. Jance's writing well enough that I'm planning to go back to the beginning and read all her books. For this reason, I give Ring in the Dead four stars. (I give five stars only to the giants: P. D. James, Ruth Rendell, John le Carre, Bill Shakespeare, Elizabeth George, etc.)Incidentally, I read some of the one and two star reviews, and I must say that I think the length of a story is not a rational reason on which to base one's critique.See you later, Ms. Jance.

Ring in the Dead the sequel
This book is like a novella that gives a heads up to the main character in the line of books with the same author.

The Beaumont character continues to entertain
Beaumont is visited by the daughter of a former, dead partner on the police force. Her assertion that Beaumont is the reason her father died causes him to follow up an old case and try to come to grips with what exactly happened. His investigation leads him to understand his true relationship with his former partner.

I enjoyed the novella. I find J. A. Jance an excellent writer. Her books always keep me enthralled to the last page. I enjoy the JP Beaumont books the best. I would recommend this book to all JANCE FANS....

More like a magazine story
Short - and I mean really short. More like a magazine story. Definitely not worth the money, wouldn't buy any more quickreads by Jance.
