This is great for those gifted students who are way above grade ...
Louisa May Alcott is famous for Little Women and Little Men. All of her books are suitable for all ages so a high lexile reading sixth grader will profit and raise reading level by reading and comparing all of her books. This is great for those gifted students who are way above grade level. It is also a superior project for a companion to the Civil War and/or the Victorian Age. The best part is that those young gifted readers should read classic books which grapple with issues that are emotionally available to their age and stage, does not launch them into too mature of material. In layman's terms if they can read the classics and find a life of the mind, they are college bound.

Warm and homey.
The author of "Little Women" gives us a heartwarming, homey tale of the Basset family, who were "poor in money, but rich in love." It's Thanksgiving Day, and the kitchen is full of the bustle of food preparations. Unexpectedly, a neighbor comes by to tell Mrs. Basset that her mother is ill, so Mr. Basset drives her away in the sleigh. Though the parents don't expect the children to prepare the Thanksgiving feast on their own, Tilly, the oldest, determines to give it a try. Things don't go smoothly in the kitchen, and many dishes are smelling a little odd as they cook, when two sleighs arrive, chock full of relatives! Grandma, it turns out, is fine, and she and aunts and uncles have come to feast at the Bassets. Though Tilly is embarrassed at the parts of the meal that didn't turn out too well, most is edible and much appreciated, and the home is filled with nourishing love and gratitude.

Not the movie
I grew up loving Louisa May Alcott's books! A family member purchased the "An Old Fashioned Thanksgiving" movie for me last month. Although a few parts of the movie were a little strange (the Lord Byron statue!)I enjoyed it. I had never heard of the book, so I got right on Amazon to order it. Frankly, I am surprised that the movie was allowed to say that it was based on the book. While the movie is about a poor widow with three children who can't have a Thanksgiving meal, a rich grandmother who comes to visit after a letter, and a romance, the book is entirely different. It is a rather dull tale of how a large household of children have to partially prepare the dinner since their mother is called away when told the grandmother is ill. This is one book I should have left out of my collection.

Truly an old fashioned Thanksgiving.
Wonderful descriptions of a time gone by. A great children's book as well as those who are young at heart.
