Walking Dead Comes Back to Life
I wanted to Give Season 3 a poke in the head and put it out of its misery. How much of the Crazy Governor were they going to force on us? How many close ups of Rick's crazy eyes? How long was the sublimely oblivious Andrea going to overlook the fact that her boyfriend was stark raving nutso? Michone, who started out impossibly over-the-top with her matched pair of pet zombies on leashes, is much more real and interesting now. No longer acting like a rebellious 13-year-old, she still wields her katanka with amazing accuracy, but has become more three-dimensional and less of a cartoon character. She is spending most of her time with the survivors and only semi-hunting for the governor...he's not completely out of the picture although I do hope he's going to be held down to a minimum. I just wish they had not killed off Merle in Season 3. He was one of my favorite characters...what's not to like about a guy who can cut off his own limb and replace it with a swiss army arm?I started watching Season 4 without much hope and boy howdy, was I surprised. There's life the The Dead yet. Episode 1 was killer. Rick regained his sanity, sort of. His son is less psychotic. Herschell's missing leg has magically regenerated. No explanations are given, but the comic book version does mention that they find, at some point, a prosthetic limb (but it's just a leg, with no interesting accessories like Merle's replacement part). I have not read the comic version, but Amazon reviewer Brian Byrd gave me that heads up elsewhere.Episode 1 has several truly creepy scenese, not least of all is Rick's encounter with a young Irish lass in the forest. We also have lots of new survivors, most of them from Woodbury, home of the Crazy Governor. In the following episodes, a serious and highly contageous illness hits the prison compound. A high death rate and those who succumb reanimate. This does two things: it gives us a new story arc and gets rid of some of the newbies. By episode 4, we're back to our core group (mostly...heh heh). And the Zombies are rocking. More hordes and they're dangerous and frightening again. For most of Season 3, the poor Zeds were nothing more than pests. Unless you were tied to a chair and locked in a room with one, they posed no threat anymore. The survivors just swatted 'em like mosquitos. Season 4 has given them back their teeth. As always, the producers' ruthlessness in cutting cast members is still shaking things up. No one is Zombie-proof or bullet-proof and some of our original recipe survivors don't make it. Unfortunately Glenn is not among the victims. Sorry, but Season 3 was seriously marred by those endless "let's drag in the kids" scenes of Glen and Maggie making out. Almost as sleep-inducing as Rick and the Governor's staring contests. We also lose two of my favorite original survivors by the end of Season 4, one by exile and one by the governor sawing off his head. Yep, the Guv continued to make trouble in Season 4, but in a more intersting way than in Season 3. No longer "The Guv," he wants to be known simply as "Brian." But he's still nuttier than a fruitcake, just in a different way. I'm hoping the exiled character comes back. Not in the reanimated sense, just in the "Hi Honey, I'm home" way.Episode 4 is intense, exciting and gory. Everything you want from The Walking Dead. I had to stop watching and take breaks from the action and mayhem once or twice. The writers have really stepped things up. The Zoombas are on the march; the new characters are interesting, particularly a little girl who sometimes mistakes the Zs for pets (but not in that silly Michone way).Episodes 5 through 7 were just as good, and the season ender was a shocker. You have to give the writers and producers credit, they'll throw anyone to the wolves (or the zombies). No one is guaranteed to survive until the time time. Makes for some really intense viewing.Let's hope next season remains reanimated or the producers will find it's their audience, not the dead, who are walking.

The discs come in plastic snap cases. They play fine.I remember watching the first season of The Walking Dead (2010- ) back in 2010. I’d never heard of the show and didn’t know anything about it. I was searching for a new favorite show after Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009) ended. The first time I watched The Walking Dead the unexpected blood and gore made me jump off the couch and walk around the living room, pacing and laughing in a defense mechanism sort of way. I was so shocked to see something that graphic on TV.After I got over my initial shock The Walking Dead became one of my favorite shows, until the fourth or fifth season. I was watching the show to see what characters from the quarry in the first season would survive to the end of the series. I dreamed of how I would end the show if I was in charge of the series. I wanted to see Carl kill Rick, then Daryl kill Carl, then Carol kill Daryl, and then have Carol surrounded and ripped apart by walkers, with Morgan watching from a second story window of a nearby building, muttering “I told them to clear. They needed to clear.” But that didn’t happen and when I heard the show’s creators talking about twelve or more seasons I realized there was no planned ending, and then they started spinoff shows like Fear the Walking Dead (2015- ), and I lost all interest in the show and stopped watching the series after season six. With no planned ending The Walking Dead is just another soap opera that I don’t care to follow. There are so many wonderful shows available to binge watch these days. I’m not going to waste my time and money on a show that doesn’t know where it’s going. Maybe I’ll watch the last episode of the show if the series ever ends to see what characters from the quarry in season one make it to the end. The show’s characters’ initial goal of surviving, established in season one, is what I cared about. I wanted to see what characters from season one survived and if they found a cure for the disease. With those goals muted the series is a ship without a rudder. If you’re looking for good stuff to watch consider miniseries like The Astronauts Wives Club (2015), Band of Brothers (2001), Frank Herbert’s Dune (2000), Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune (2003), Into the West (2005), Lonesome Dove (1989), Manhattan (2014-2015), Return to Lonesome Dove (1993), Pride and Prejudice (1995), Taken (2002) and The 10th Kingdom (2000), which are all terrific because they have clear beginnings that establish an objective, then strong middles and conclusive endings where the goal is achieved, like a good novel.Other shows I’ve really enjoyed include Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009), Breaking Bad (2008-2013), Cowboy Bebop (1998), Downton Abbey (2010-2015), Firefly (2002), Game of Thrones (2011-2019), Granite Flats (2013-2015), The IT Crowd (2006-2013), Jericho (2006-2008), Merlin (2008-2012), The Prisoner (1967-1968), Rome (2005-2007), Spartacus: Gods of the Arena (2011), Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2010), Stargate: SG-1 (1997-2007), Stargate: Atlantis (2004-2009), Star Trek (1966-1969), Star Trek Voyager (1995-2001), and The Tudors (2007-2010). I didn’t list any contemporary series I’m following that don’t have an end date yet, not conducive to binge watching from beginning to finish. If you like reading try some of my favorite fantasy and sci-fi authors: Richard Adams, Palo Bacigulupi, Suzanne Collins, Abe Evergreen, Diana Gabaldon, Hugh Howey, George Martin, Brandon Sanderson, John Scalzi, and Andy Weir.
