Vintage Hairstyles: Simple Steps for Retro Hair with a Modern Twist

Great Book!
This book is great if you already know the basics of vintage hairstyles and are looking for more ideas. The book does a lovely job of giving historical notes on the looks and makeup for each time period (1910 through 1960s) which is exceptionally helpful for those who are looking to know more about what was worn in the period. For me, the most helpful part of this book was the section on bangs, or the front part of a hairdo. The style in front is a quick way to give most normal curly hairstyles that vintage feel, and I was looking for some variation. There is also a good selection of full updos for more formal looks.I also have Vintage Hairstyling by Lauren Rennels, and I really feel like these two books compliment each other. Vintage Hairstyling does a great job of providing in depth details and pictures of how to do different curling methods, the directions to roll them, etc. It also goes into detail about how to roll and set hair for a handful of different “complete” looks and updos. The directions are very clear, and this book was my go to for getting a solid handle on technique. I absolutely love having both. If I want detailed notes on how to do a certain roll, I look here. If I want more styles and ideas to choose from, or I want to pair a part of one look with another, I look to Vintage Hairstyles for ideas.

Perfect for both everyday hairstyles and full vintage looks
I love this book! I've tried 2 different hairstyles so far and both have turned out great. The directions are easy to follow and I like that the book includes styles that can be created with dry hair, using a flat or curling iron (for those of us who skipped the included set-work on damp hair or decided last-minute to try a new 'do).I've looked into other vintage hair style guides and felt like they were either too much work or would look odd without dressing head-to-toe in the clothing and make-up for that era, too. This book is perfect because of its "modern twist" to the looks. You could wear several of these styles any day of the week with regular clothes and look nice (without the disconnect between your hair and clothes) - or you could use them to really enhance and pull together a full vintage look. Either way, it's a great investment and lots of fun.

... book while it was on sale and I'm so glad I scooped it up when I did
I purchased this book while it was on sale and I'm so glad I scooped it up when I did. I dress in pin-up clothes pretty frequently and one thing I always have problems with is the hair. No matter how hard I try, I could never seem to get the hair right. I've admittedly got better at it, but let's face it, if you are as terrible as I am at doing hair in general, victory rolls and holding pin curls can be intimidating and seem impossible. This book starts off with write ups of the hair fashions of the different decades. It tells you the tools you will need to produce the looks you want and there are even pictures showing exactly how to do certain techniques! It's heavily illustrated and beautifully laid out as well as simple to read and follow along.

A wonderful guide to vintage chic!
I was pleasantly surprised by this book! I feel it was thoughtfully written for a reader who admires retro fashion, but wants to capture the look and feel of an era more than adhere to exact replication. It seems to say, we can adore the look of the 1950's without being limited by the tools of the day (or their attitudes about women in general)! It touches on a range of vintage styling topics other than hair as well, such as makeup, nails, and glasses. It even includes a few tutorials for DIY hair accessories. It provides step-by-step instructions with photos for quite a few hairstyles. While many of them appear easy to follow, I do wish there had been more pictures of the finished hairstyle, so the reader knows exactly what to aim for. However, this may have been intentional, as the author encourages you to be creative with your choices. I also would have liked to see a more detailed section on victory rolls, something I struggle with personally.Overall, I think it is a great introduction to vintage hairstyles and the aesthetics of the past.

pretty good
Pretty good, some of the written instructions are a bit confusing and it would be better to see some curler patterns in here, just hard to figure out what they mean by inside or outside when talking about how to hold and turn and curl the hair, could also recommend a few products

Interesting & informative
I was looking for a book to help me learn tricks to accomplish retro styles quickly. This book offers step by step pictures and also a history of techniques and styles. It even covers hair accessories like scarves and makeup. The only thing I think it's missing is a final detailed pic of each hairstyle. It includes a beautiful headshot of the model wearing the style but I'd like to see a final close-up of the hair itself. This is going to be my much-used reference manual when designing my hair.

Good beginners guide to the 1950’s
This book is great! Simple and a nice step stool for those interested in the 1950’s! It’s a real beginners guide so don’t expect anything to detailed. Loved the read and ideas. Wish there was more in it but great for me nonetheless.

Beautiful from cover to cover
The book is beautiful from cover to cover. I was in a show and needed some inspiration for styling my hair suitable for the 1960s. It definitely helped me to do this and make up tips as well! I would definitely recommend this book.

So very few picures!
The hairdos are lovely but it lacks more pictures for the step-by-step instructions. I wouldn't have bought it if I'd known.
