Did Mattel decide to write these things in house? I'm sorry but this third series of Monster High book are terrible. I've been a MH fan for a while, and have read the first and second series of books. I admit the first series may have been a bit too "teen" for the preteen audience. Doing a reshuffle and getting a new writer was okay. The Ghoulfriends series by Gitty Daneshvai was perfect. Coming closest to matching the web episodes and movies. The stories were woven together from the perspective of three characters we normally don't get to see and made it fun. Like the Ghouls were having the book adventures without conflicting with other stories online or movie. Why that series was suddenly stopped I will only guess, but I say that this new "Diaries" series is terrible. The first was Draculara who we all have seen and will keep seeing. I felt that who ever was writing this has gone even further down the maturity ladder and created stories for six year olds, and don't hand me that's who is meant for. I put aside thinking," well every franchise has to have its rough patches." The only problem is that this second installment is just a boring and plodding as the last one.Being familuar with Mattel's reputation on dumping on quality and doing things in house for a quick buck. I would not be at all surprised that Mattel was desperate to get some kind of book series for MH back on the shelves, no matter what. Especially when you take in account how long it has been since book from the last series was. These are just painfully boring with nothing that really happens and spends the entire 130 some odd pages not doing it. This newest installment even shamelessly crowbar in the most in your face adversting oh the new exchange ghouls it feels like reading a commercial.I used to enjoy MH the books especially, but if this is what we can expect in future then be sure to turn off the lights and lock up when you are done because I'm not sticking around for the next disaster

A really good book
This is written as a mix of diary entries and regular prose writing. In this case there are two things going on. First, Frankie has a school project to work on. The project succeeds and disappears. The second thing is that Frankie is to meet Dawndancer, a new exchange ghoul, and help her adjust to Monster High. Something else important happens and that is that Frankie is able further develop her bond with her father as she works in his lab and finds out she has a talent for working there and making something. So, you have a young girl (Frankie) who has normal problems at school (her school project), and important development in father-daughter bonding and also has Frankie helping a new student (from a different country, too) adjust to her new life at Monster High. You have some really good themes going on, themes that relate to the types of things facing teenagers as they go through their high school years. There are problems they will face, of course, but with inner strength and the help of friends they will deal with those problems and go on to help others. An excellent addition to the Monster High books.
