book is not well illustrative very basic no real help on forms. the first book i have ever returned. i think this book is just more of an overview rather than an instructional book.

Excellent Regardless of Lineage
I highly recommend this book. Alan Gibson does an excellent job in providing a great reference tool. The drills and explanation are useful. This is a keeper. If you are not familiar with Gibson don't worry. He's good. This book will be used by you for a long, long time. I look at it regular for practice ideas, and it sits right next to my reading chair.

Great Book... Really Enjoying it
This book has great insights for any Wing Chun/Ving Tsun lineage. I myself study under a different lineage (GM Moy Yat), but am really getting great information from this book... it's a real value. Highly recommended.

Fantastic book!
Alan's book gives a clear and detailed picture of the Wong Shun Leung Wing Chun system; in the new edition he has added some wonderful flow charts that give the reader an overall view of the entire system at a glance. Alan's expert knowledge and passion for Wing Chun are apparent on every page; I cannot recommend his book enough.SincerelyGreg LeBlanc

This is a great way to get to spend some time with him
I had the please to meet Alan at a seminar recently. You can't learn any martial art from a book, it is by its very nature a hands on endeavour. What you can do is gain a deeper understanding. This book is as others have said a compilation that has been amended to include new insights. Alan is one of the most respected and knowledgable Ving Tsun practitioners in the UK. This is a great way to get to spend some time with him, even if you can't train with him in person it lets you have some of his knowledge on the subject.Gives you lots to think about.

In depth
Great book that studies this great art and breaks down a lot of the mystery around the system explaining the path to mastery of this system involves, understanding and drills with good practice.Author has carried on learning even when at the top of his branch of Wing Chun he has looked elsewhere to learn more and is passing this knowledge on.Great book.

How to apply Wing Chun
If you are a student of Wing Chun, you are most likely learning it for self protection. I've got a few of Alan's books, and to find all that information in one place, with some new material added, is something beyond value. For the record, I am a student of the Ip Ching lineage, but there are, to my knowledge, no books or DVDs on that method currently. I have found the Wong Shun Leung method to be the closest thing to what Ip Ching teaches. If you want to learn the empty hand forms of Wing Chun from a book, as a student of another art or a novice, I recommend Samuel Kwok'sΒ Mastering Wing Chun Β - I would recommend that you find a good instructor if you are serious about Wing Chun, but that is up to you. If you are already a practising student of Wing Chun, regardless of your lineage, and want to apply it for self protection, Alan Gibson's books are for you. This is the most complete of those books. A balance
I have spent the past few years trying to find the right path that will take me to my goal of learning Wing Chun. I have been let down and almost to the point of giving up on my dream. But I was lucky to find someone who is now my Sifu - Steven Maidens, who is not only honest, but has passion and through him I have been reccomended this book. All I can say to you is this, I have many books on Wing Chun, but this is the only one that makes sense to someone who wants to learn. It is written by someone who has also struggled and overcome to get to their dream. It is written with honesty, vast knowledge and it inspires you! Some people look at the sky and wish, but some get to fly.. which are you?Even if you dont do Wing Chun, but are interested in a combat art, buy it, you wont be sorry. But be aware Wing Chun is not a destination, but a journey - a bit like life!
