Important book.
Wonderful book in a series of great and important tomes on the Roman Republic/Empire. Great reading!

Saisissant.

Excellent Introduction
This is one of a series of books dealing explicitly with the History of Ancient Rome from first beginnings to the decline of Empire and beyond. Each book deals with a date range which closely matches those used in the classic Cambridge Ancient History series which of course has a much wider remit. The Edinburgh series is quite explicitly a straightforward narrative history as opposed to the Cambridge series where the treatment is much more thematic. As such this series forms a well written, readable and satisfyingly detailed introduction to the subject, and being published only recently have the (presumed!) additional benefit of incorporating the latest thinking and research.I am reading the Cambridge series as well, but am reading the Edinburgh series first just to get a good grasp of general chronology, major events, significant characters etc. The Edinburgh series is an excellent introduction and approach to what is becoming an increasingly complex subject.I have bought two more volumes from the series and copied this review for each of them.
