An Interesting And Well Written Guidebook
I have always loved the Great North Woods of New Hampshire and as I am turning 50 this year wanted to do something memorable, so I figured a thru-hike of the Cohos trail would be just the thing. When I heard the new Cohos Trail guidebook would be available I downloaded it in Kindle form the first day it was out, and began to devour the information. It is written in a different style than many guidebooks, as it truly goes beyond just telling you where the trail goes it describes sites along the way and delves into the history and geology of the area.Nilsen writes in a manner that takes you along the trail, doing a fantastic job describing areas like Table Rock, The Devil’s Hopyard and Pond Brook Falls to the point that I felt that I was there, and getting me that much more excited to see these places first hand. The book takes you from the Southernmost spot in Crawford notch and delivers you northward to the Canadian Border. Through the use of this book as well as the associated maps (excited as I believe new ones are due out soon) I feel confident that this 165 mile trek from a directional standpoint anyways should go smoothly. I am hiking north to south so I’ll just pay a bit more attention. After I complete the hike this summer I’ll give an update as to how well the guidebook worked.

Cohos trail guide
This guide has a lot of great details. It gives you descriptions of places where you need to turn or when the trail changes. Unfortunately, much of that information is too extraneous. Also, the mileage that's posted in the guide is very inaccurate. It will tell you you have one mile to walk and it will end up being more like 4 to 5. We found this incredibly frustrating. Also remember that there are no maps included. They have to be purchased separately. Luckily they both are inexpensive.

First-rate guide to the best of NH's North Country
This updated guide to the Cohos Trail will be indispensable to hikers on New Hampshire's northernmost trails. The southern end of the trail is in the over-traveled White Mountains, but it moves north into more remote country with a beauty of its own. The guide is written by Kim Nilsen, the man who first imagined the trail and who has been instrumental in building all 160+ miles of it. He includes in the book some information about the history of the area. He also refers readers to the trail's web site, which will maintain updates on trail conditions including unexpected re-routes.For anyone planning a northern New Hampshire hike, be certain you have this guide in your pack. Welcome to the Granite State!

Northern section is a work in progress. Not sure I can follow the trail based upon the description in this book!
The section I am most interested in and for which I purchased this book is the last 30 miles of the trail. Because of the continuing development of that part of the trail, I found the trail description confusing and am now concerned about losing the trail up in the Connecticut lakes/Boundary mountain region of the trail. I will be hiking that part this summer but will expect problems with trail locations. I would suggest that the author follow the formats of any of the AT section books or the Vermont Long Trail book (Vt Long Trail book is VERY well documented and includes maps that show detail as well as elevation diagrams. I will say that in hiking the trail up to young's store I only had trail location problems in one other section and that was in the NAsh Stream area where I could not locate the Lean-to that is located just before Dixville Notch. I hope that section has been better marked since I was there. All in all this trail is really great in concept and as it matures will be enjoyed by all long distance hikers.

Very useful and quick shipping!
Husband planned a 4 day trip. Detailed map made planning the hike into the wilderness easy. He was able to plan easy exit routes for supplies or if they needed to make a quick exit to civilization.
