Do you have to put the shelves and mesh on the back?

You can use this desk without the shelves or mesh. The mesh is handy for cable management

Is it possible to assemble it the 'other way around'? That is, to have the short side of the desk on your right hand instead of your left hand?

With some modifications anything is possible, but without getting out the power tools and MacGuyvering it together... unfortunately not.

How much weight can this desk hold up too?

not sure about the licence on the product but it will be more then 100kg. we had 2 people sitting on it with a total of 140kg and it did not look like on edge
